Pottawattamie County Public Health is announcing the hiring of a Public Health Nurse I to serve citizens throughout 6 Counties in Southwest Iowa. 

An individual in this position will fulfill weekly WIC clinic time and childcare provider assistance and training. Will provide services in Collaborative Service Area (CSA) 3 of Pottawattamie, Mills, Cass, Shelby, Harrison, and Monona Counties and have required scheduled travel within the CSA. Duty location is the Pottawattamie County WIC office; under limited supervision of the PHN II, a Public Health Nurse I will:

· Determine eligibility for WIC and refer for benefits, support, or health care

· Document in appropriate database and follow-up with clientele on goals, needs, and referrals

· Provide public education on available services/programs

· Within the scope of practice, provide immunizations, testing/treatment, & medical procedures

· Link with other health programs in the CSA

· Ensure compliance with Iowa HHS and Iowa Medicaid Enterprise

· Assist with policy development

CCNC Program: 
Provide Child Care Nurse Consulting (CCNC) services to improve the quality of health & safety in early care & education (ECE) programs and their families. Serve a minimum of 50% of providers in the region.

· On-site assessments of environment/operations to assist in identifying and implementing health & safety improvement plans with a Health & Safety Assessment and Child Record Reviews

· Coordinate with childcare, parents, & medical providers, as needed, to create care plans for children with special health care needs. ie. asthma, food allergies, diabetes

· Educate and collaborate with community licensing staff/policymakers to improve regulations, inspections, resources, and policies that promote inclusive, safe and healthy childcare programs

· Monthly provider newsletter

· Train childcare providers in preparation of response/recovery from emergencies and disasters

· Provide quarterly provider training/assessment: 2 medication admin.; 1 pre-approved, optional

· Schedule IQ4K quality rating assessment visits within 3 weeks of being requested by provider

WIC Program:
Improve the health of Women, Infant and Children (WIC) eligible families by providing preventive nutrition services through health screening, nutrition ed., breastfeeding promotion, nutritious foods, and referrals to other providers.

· Complete health and nutrition screening, provide nutrition education and referrals

· Provide breastfeeding education, support and referrals

· Conduct assessment to determine medical risk: measuring length/height and weight, performing hemoglobin test, and completing health questionnaire

· Certify WIC participants based on risk determined by the assessment

· Create/tailor WIC food packages for distribution according to policy

· Provide monthly childhood immunizations at Pottawattamie County WIC

General knowledge of the principles, standards, practices and techniques of practical and vocational nursing. 

General knowledge of the dangers inherent in and the precautions to be taken in the use of drugs and other medication.

General knowledge of treatment, assessment, immunization and related medical services.

General knowledge of local and State rules, regulations, procedures and policies pertaining to nursing services; general knowledge of the principles of public health services.

General knowledge of the methods of organizing, coordinating and carrying out health and wellness programs.

Skill in administering examinations, tests and treatment.

Skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment.

Skill in excellent customer service.

Skill in administering shots and vaccinations.

Ability to exercise judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.

Ability to accurately maintain patient medical records and prepare reports.

Ability to handle confidential information according to established procedures.

Ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

Ability to diagnose and administer treatment of a variety of common illnesses and injuries.

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.

Ability to repair and maintain assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Administrators, coworkers, nurses, program leads, patients, and the general public.

Associates/Technical degree with coursework in practical nursing, vocational nursing, or related field.

Registered Nurse preferred; and moderate experience assisting with general nursing operations, administering vaccinations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications

Possession of Red Cross CPR certification, BLS and State of Iowa Department of Human Services Child and Adult Abuse certification upon hire.

Willing to complete required trainings/certifications for CCNC, WIC, Family Planning Programs within 3 months of hire.

Obtain Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, and 700, basic epidemiology training, blood borne pathogen training and Respirator Fit Test within 6 months of hire.

Valid driver's license in the State of Iowa.
