Summary: The Circulation Supervisor manages the staff and activities of the Circulation Department in order to ensure high-quality, equitable customer experiences and efficient operations. Coordinates work with library manager and other Circulation Supervisors in the Library District. Provides positive customer service experiences to customers of all ages, backgrounds, identities and abilities and ensures procedures and systems are established and maintained.

- Oversees and coordinates all circulation activities within a District branch library.
- Manages hourly and classified staff to ensure equitable, courteous, efficient service to customers of all ages, backgrounds, identities and abilities.
- Models excellent customer service including de-escalation and problem-solving.
- Oversees hiring, training and supporting employees.
- Communicates job expectations to staff; provides coaching and development. Reviews job performance.
- Builds and maintains staff morale and trust. Manages staff concerns, needs and issues.
- Skilled at problem-solving and quick thinking, as well as being calm under pressure.
- Plans, assigns, and oversees the work of classified and hourly staff.
- Reviews and approves timesheets (payroll).
- Schedules hourly, classified and volunteer staff.
- Administers financial functions including customer payments, donations and refunds.
- Addresses issues relating to Circulation Department and works with Circulation Supervisors within the Library District to review and revise policies, training and department processes.
- Keeps current with various Library and office technologies, actively introducing and/or implementing new technologies.
- Develops, oversees and reviews ongoing projects, and plans at the department, branch and district level.
- Evaluates work processes and implements ways to improve workflows within the Circulation Department.
- Works closely with supervisor on branch operations, facility management and staff management. Works with other department managers and supervisors as needed.
- May serve on project and task-based teams.
- Writing skills, detail-orientation, ability to coordinate multiple ongoing events, and manage multiple library accounts.
- Experience in planning, coordinating meetings, and working on diversity-related programs or initiatives.
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Acts as Person in Charge as needed; responds to and documents emergencies.
- Performs functions of employees supervised as needed.
- Works with the public to resolve problems and provide service.

Education/Experience:
High School diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred. One to three years of related experience in Library/Circulation work required. Office or staff management, customer service, or equivalent combination of education and experience for three years is preferred.
Language Abilities:
Ability to speak, read, write, analyze, and interpret English required. Spanish language skills preferred. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from colleagues, staff, customers and the general public.
Reasoning Abilities:
Ability to solve practical problems and manage variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for the supervision of Customer Experience Representative (hourly) staff, Assistant Circulation Supervisors (part-time staff) and volunteers.
Work Environment:
Primary work is performed in a busy library environment with most of the work day seated or working near a computer station. Extensive interaction with customers and staff while working on multiple tasks. Noise level can fluctuate from moderate to loud. A Circulation Supervisor is required to work a variety of scheduled hours including days, nights, and weekends as needed.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk and hear; use hands to handle, or feel. The demands on the visual sense are extremely high. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; climb and balance. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Push moveable carts loaded to a maximum of 150 pounds.
