Position Overview :
The HIV Peer Counselor is responsible for assessing and coordinating care for program participants, ensuring they receive the necessary services to improve their physical and mental wellness. This role involves working closely with program participants, their support networks, and healthcare professionals to develop and implement tailored care plans. The Peer Counselor also coordinates with the Non-Medical Case Manager, Social Worker, Physician, or the Medical Case Manager who also plays a key role in monitoring program participant progress, providing peer counseling or intervention when needed, and performing outreach activities as part of the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) or Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI) initiatives.
Key Responsibilities :
Peer Counseling & Support :
- Facilitate individual therapeutic sessions with program participants, drawing on personal experience with similar issues to provide guidance and support.
- Assist program participants in implementing treatment goals and objectives, including adherence to prescribed therapeutic regimens, medications, and medical procedures.
- Provide emotional support and encouragement to help program participants manage their health and well-being.

QUALIFICATIONS : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE : High School Diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree highly preferred. At least two years' experience with peer work type experience. Knowledge of standards and ethics is associated with the position.
LANGUAGE SKILLS : Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to program participants, clients, and other employees of the organization. Bi-lingual preferred.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Development of Standards. Analyzing Information. Dealing with Complexity. Data Entry, Reporting Research Results. Confidentiality. Detail-oriented.
REASONING ABILITY : Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
COMPUTER SKILLS : To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient with MS Office : Excel and Word, Outlook, database programs, point of sale software, internet. Online HR and payroll access, Point of Sale and inventory software.
