Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist students who are in need of specialized health care procedures.
Provide clinical nursing care for students who have been identified as needing specialized health care procedures. EPerform specific skilled nursing procedures such as catheterization, tube feedings, suctioning, range of motion exercises and other specialized health care procedures. E
Monitor students for changes in health status. E
Assure that procedures are provided under specific written procedures approved by the physician and requested by the patient. E
Work cooperatively with the school staff and the nursing personnel to provide health care as specified in the least disruptive manner to the educational process. E
Communicate with parents and physicians according to established policies and procedures; remain current on student status. E
Communicate with District resource nurses to assure legal compliance in all areas of student health procedures and practices; prepare and maintain legal documentation as required. E
Ride bus with students, assessing health changes and providing care as required; drive a vehicle to conduct work. E
Relieve other nursing personnel as assigned. E
Maintain procedure log of services provided and document other significant health information in nursing notes; prepare assigned reports. E
Assist teachers with other students as needed; may assist students by carrying, pushing or pulling students in wheelchairs. E
Perform related duties as assigned.
NOTE: At the end of some of the duty statements, there is an "E" which identifies essential duties required of the classification.Graduation from an accredited nursing school program and two years experience providing health services to children.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid and current California nursing license (Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse).
Valid and current certificate of proficiency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR Level C) issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Current California driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Catheterization methods and procedures.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Health and safety regulations including universal precautions.
Operation of specialized medical equipment.
Record-keeping techniques.
Nursing care required for preschool aged children.
ABILITY TO:
Assist students who are in need of specialized health care procedures.
Travel to various school sites within the District to perform a wide variety of nursing duties.
Catheterize students and perform other related health procedures according to established regulations.

Handle emergencies in a calm and effective manner.
Utilize medical equipment and supplies appropriately.
Establish files, records, reports and referrals.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 (Minimum Salary) of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.
