**Please note that the current vacancy for this position is at Poway High School and the schedule is 28.5 hours per week, 9.5 months per year, and is Benefits Eligible.**

***This Eligibility List will be good for 6 months and will be used to fill future vacancies.  These positions are only at Middle Schools and High Schools.*** 

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of paraprofessional duties related to the operation of a school student services center for those with limited English or non-English proficiency.  Educate students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.  Document and assist students with sensitive issues and concerns such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.  Facilitate and participate in support groups; advocacy projects; community service opportunities; and programs related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence education and/or prevention activities. 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 

Operate the student service center in accordance with policies and directives; communicate with limited or non-English speaking students regarding issues of a personal nature and provide resources as necessary to respond to questions. Discern and refer issues of a serious nature to certified staff.  E 

Collect, organize, maintain and disseminate resource materials and information on topics including tobacco cessation programs, drug and alcohol abuse prevention programs, community volunteering opportunities, and counseling and information resources. E 

Facilitate and participate in a variety of support group meetings and programs including tobacco cessation, intervention and education classes; peer assistance; conflict mediation sessions; and parent education meetings as required. E 

Call in students who have been referred by alcohol, tobacco, and substance abuse related issues; explain school policies. E 

Participate in professional development and District/site trainings, when requested. E 

Provide general guidance and nurturance to students. E 

Communicate with students, staff, parents, and the public, including those with limited or non-English proficiency, regarding services offered. E 

Assist students, parents and staff in the location and effective use of resource materials and make referrals to outside agencies as appropriate. E 

Make informational presentations to students, teachers, parents, and the public to publicize student services resources and activities; arrange guest speakers and field trips. E 

Design and implement office records and filing systems; prepare and maintain records and files related to students and program schedules. E 

Perform various clerical tasks in support of Student Services including duplicating and assembling materials, typing, preparing correspondence, preparing flyers and brochures and related tasks. E 

Monitor supply inventory for program activities; inform District Office of the need to order and purchase supplies in accordance with established limitations. E 

Perform related duties as assigned.

Oral and written communication skills, including correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary in English and a designated second language. 

Laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. 

Interpersonal skills, including cultural sensitivity, using tact, patience and courtesy. 

At-risk student behaviors. 

Basic computer skills. 

 

ABILITY TO: 

Perform student support activities to enhance and reinforce behavioral and social skills to students. Assist students with tobacco abuse, substance abuse, bullying, low self-esteem, anger management, decision making, and other matters which prevent full educational potential. 

Perform a variety of paraprofessional duties related to the operation of a school student services center. 

Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff members, both orally and in writing, in English and a designated second language including cultural sensitivity. 

Establish and maintain professional, cooperative, and effective working relationships with students and adults. 

Follow oral and written directions. 

Work independently with little direction. 

Work confidentially with discretion; maintain confidentiality when working with student information. 

Assemble, organize and prepare data for records and reports. 

Answer telephones and greet the public courteously. 

Understand and work within the scope of assigned duties. 

Assess, understand and respond to the needs of students. 

Prepare records and maintain reports. 

Make oral presentations. 

Meet schedules and timelines. 

Plan and organize work. 

Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. 

Maintain working relationships with local agency service providers. 


Any combination equivalent to: completion of two years of college level training in career or vocational education, counseling, psychology or a related field and one year of paid or volunteer work experience involving close contact with school-aged young people.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license.

In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 (Minimum Salary) of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.
