Position Summary:
The Online Buyback Department Head is responsible for the incoming processes of used books at the warehouse which includes all books sourced via online buyback and large buy processes. This includes the distribution of used books throughout the corporation. Works in cooperation with RDC Managers on warehouse operations and staffing and with the Director of Inventory, Store Inventory Managers, and other stakeholders that intersect with used inventory throughout the company. Coordinates large buys of used inventory with location UBB Managers. The OBB Manager shares feedback and provides input on used book processes and systems as the need for changes occur. They share responsibility with the RDC management team for operating a warehouse including security, safety and space allocation. The OBB Manager takes the lead in developing staff and expanding book knowledge on their team while supporting individuals in their work to fulfill the Company’s vision and values. Independently takes action with regard to OBB processes and demonstrates initiative by improving upon existing systems. Goals, objectives and significant business decisions are reviewed and/or approved by the RDC Manager prior to implementation. Reports to the RDC Manager.
Essential Functions:
- Supervises the day-to-day activities of the OBB Receiving Department. Assigns projects, monitors work flow, and prioritizes work. Sets productivity goals with RDC Manager and celebrates accomplishments with staff.
- Works with RDC Manager in aspects of personnel, including hiring, coaching employees, timekeeping, and progressive discipline. Conducts performance evaluations.
- Processes orders and has mastery of OBB and used book processes. Leads by example through all RDC functions.
- Coordinates Internet running schedule, and works closely with RDC manager on warehouse Internet operations.
- Proactive in developing systems and procedures to maximize space, resource planning and order processing.
- Maintains close relationship with accounting to assure accuracy of payments to OBB customers and billing of used inventory to stores.
- Develops team and individuals in their work including Bookscape modules, receiving processes and inventory functions. Fosters an environment that expands book knowledge and title awareness.
- Keeps regular communication with RDC Replenishment Manager and stores to maintain speed and accuracy of receiving and distribution.
- Keeps regular communication with Contact Center staff, Marketing, and Website Manager on OBB customer issues.
- Tracks and improves profitability and productivity for retail distribution systems.
- Shares responsibility for the daily operations and efficient functioning of the warehouse with the other members of the RDC management team, including scheduling, prioritizing workflow, and assigning daily tasks, opening and closing.
- Assists in the establishment of standards, policies and procedures for the department and the warehouse.
- Assumes responsibility for projects and areas of operations as the need arises through RDC's continued growth.
- Works closely with the Warehouse Management Team to further a sense of community at the warehouse and ensure safety of the staff and security of building & contents.
- Additional duties and projects, as needed.
- Participates in corporate meetings as a representative of RDC and the warehouse.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Requires work experience in supervising, leading, and training employees or demonstrated leadership skills in a Level II position (or higher) at Powell’s.
- Leadership/supervisory skills necessary to direct RDC.
- Used book processing or buying experience highly desirable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Detail oriented and analytical experience preferred.
- Strong computer skills including demonstrable experience using MS Office Suite of software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prioritize and handle a variety of tasks.
- Ability to foster teamwork.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Love of reading and books.
