Role Description:

This is a full-time on-site Relay Settings Engineering role at Power and Control Systems, Inc. located in Baton Rouge, LA. The relay settings engineer will be responsible for designing, configuring, and testing protection relay systems used in electrical power systems. Their primary focus will be to ensure that these relays function properly to protect the electrical equipment and infrastructure from faults, such as short circuits or overloads, which could lead to damage or disruptions in the power supply.


Responsibilities:

  • Design and Configuration: Developing relay settings configurations based on system requirements, ensuring proper coordination with other protective devices in the power system.
  • Testing and Validation: Conducting tests and simulations to validate relay settings, ensuring they respond appropriately to various fault scenarios without causing unnecessary tripping or failure to protect the system.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Creating documentation detailing relay settings, configurations, test procedures, and results. This documentation is crucial for compliance purposes and future reference.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with other engineers, technicians, and stakeholders to understand system requirements, troubleshoot issues, and implement effective relay protection strategies.
  • Maintenance and Upgrades: Monitoring the performance of relay systems, conducting periodic maintenance, and recommending upgrades or modifications to enhance system reliability and performance.
  • Compliance and Standards: Ensuring that relay settings adhere to industry standards, regulatory requirements, and safety guidelines.
  • Training and Support: Providing guidance and training to other team members or field technicians on relay settings, testing procedures, and best practices.


Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in the relay setting field.
  • Understanding of power systems, transmission, distribution, and grid infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of protective relays, their functions, settings, and coordination.
  • Competence in using relay setting software like ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, or similar tools for setting relay parameters and analyzing protection schemes.
  • Experience with relay testing procedures, fault analysis, and simulation software.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (such as IEEE, IEC) for protection systems.
  • Basic computer skills with emphasis on MS Excel.


Preferred Qualifications:

These qualifications are preferred but not required.

  • Communication: Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively, especially when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Self motivated learner: Being motivated to learn or achieve something due to your own enthusiasm is a huge plus in our field.
  • Problem-solving: Analytical skills to troubleshoot issues and optimize relay settings.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision is crucial in relay settings to ensure the protection system operates correctly.
  • Adaptability: Given the dynamic nature of the power industry, being adaptable to new technologies and methodologies is important.


Certifications:

  • Professional Certifications: PE license and certifications from organizations like IEEE (e.g., Certified Protection Professional) can be advantageous and demonstrate expertise in the field.
  • Manufacturer-specific Training: Training certifications from relay manufacturers, such as SEL, Siemens, GE, or ABB, can also be beneficial.
