Position Summary

The Director of Behavioral Health Services reports to the Vice President of Nursing/CNO and is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and integrating services for the Behavioral Health Program operations and performance.  Works, collaboratively with nursing leadership to facilitate effective communication and problem-solving.  Fosters an environment of professional growth and development. This leadership role requires ensuring high-quality patient care, compliance with regulatory requirements, and effective management of staff and resources.

 

Ensures that all patients and guests receive optimal, safe care and professional services that are provided in compliance with State/Federal regulations and TJC and in accordance with accepted practices of the nursing profession, and are in concert with the mission and objectives of the Hospital. Fosters an environment of professional growth and development. As a member of Nursing Leadership, participates in the development of regional, system-wide goals, plans, policies, and procedures.

 

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this transformational leader will include the management and development of staff, maintaining high standards of care for all patients, effective communication with staff and patients, setting long-term goals, developing business plans and budgets, and ensuring the units are compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations.

 

Quality

  • Assists with the development, monitoring, and integration of Performance/Quality Improvement Programs.  Evaluates methods and resources in order to improve the quality of service.  Assists with the responsibility for directing continuous Performance Improvement Teams to improve patient care and customer service, benchmark standards, and develop cost containment targets.
  • Monitors compliance with all established standards of licensing, accrediting, and regulatory agencies as well as internal entities.  Initiates corrective action as necessary.   Leads workgroups in preparation for Joint Commission and Board of Health.
  • Remains abreast of advances in the ancillary healthcare and/or nursing fields by pursuing a program of self-development and by participation in regional, local, state, or national professional organizations.  Incorporates such developments into service areas when practical and cost-effective.
  • Collaborate with nursing leadership and other hospital departments to provide appropriate standards of care for patients with selected diagnoses and/or complex needs.
  • Develop and implement performance metrics to evaluate service effectiveness and patient/caregiver satisfaction.

 

People

  • Serves as participant or liaison to designated medical staff, and system stakeholders for Behavioral Health. Act as liaison with physician(s) to (1) assure all covered aspects of treatment are fully documented, (2) assist in identifying other options for care when patients no longer require acute hospitalization, securing appropriate referrals (IOP outpatient services or required placement), (3) assists medical staff in identifying and/or resolving care problems, (4) provides information, suggests alternatives, assists in securing timely resolution to identified needs.
  • Develops all managers through role modeling, teaching and delegation of appropriate decision-making responsibilities.
  • Ensures the effective organizational structure of the division including:
    • Efficient and appropriate delineation of duties/responsibilities/workflow patterns.
    • Appropriate management/supervision and staffing levels.
    • Mechanisms for timely communication of pertinent information.
    • Delegates these responsibilities as appropriate.  Assists subordinate managers with the development of their department/unit organizational structures as well as with their own programs of professional/managerial development
  • Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for behavioral health services, including taking initiative, strategic thinking, dynamic people management, problem-solving and communication.

 

Service

  • Supports and promotes operational excellence initiatives:
    • Rounds on patients, physicians, families, staff and other departments
    • Participates in hospital wide patient perception of care initiatives including but not limited to: Hospital/ System wide committees
    • Service recovery activities
    • Implements procedures for discharge follow up
  • Grow and foster relationships with community organizations, healthcare providers, legal/courts, regional mental health providers, and referral sources.

 

Growth

  • Develops departmental goals and practice standards. Supports and implements PCS philosophy and goals/objectives at the unit level and in all interactions with other members of the health care team.
  • Prepares the annual Scope of Practice at the end of the fiscal year delineating individual and divisional accomplishments, quality improvement summaries and budget management reports. Evaluates results and report findings to the VP of Patient Care Services.
  • Assists with the direction of major projects to prepare for a changing healthcare environment, including re-engineering and computerization of processes.
  • Create a comprehensive mental health program that increases referrals and public awareness of our BHS services.

 

Finance

  • Participation in the development of clinical and financial short- and long-term goals and objectives for Patient Care Services is consistent with the strategic plans and mission of the system. 
  • Assist department leads in developing and meeting unit specific goals, including staffing plans and Scope of Care.  Monitors progress towards goals/objectives and provide feedback/follow up to supervisor regarding such progress.

Education/Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Services, Hospital Administration, Nursing, or Business Administration, or closely related field required.
  • Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Services, Hospital Administration, Nursing, or Business Administration, or closely related field preferred.
  • Five or more years of management experience with behavioral health
  • Five to seven years of progressively more responsible professional experience in order to:
    • Acquire advanced knowledge of the respective systems.
    • Develop knowledge of licensing/accrediting standards and regulations.
    • Develop an understanding of hospital and system-wide organizational structures.
  • Proven experience in program development, clinical supervision, and budget management.
  • Inpatient Psychiatric experiance required.
  • Acquires suitable interpersonal, analytical, and managerial skills and knowledge.
