**Job Summary**
The Phlebotomist serves as a liaison between the hospital laboratory and patients by collecting blood, urine, and other specimens from inpatients and outpatients under general supervision. This is done according to prescribed aseptic technique for use in clinical and diagnostic laboratory testing.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collecting blood, urine, and other specimens from patients under aseptic conditions.
- Handling problem-solving regarding specimen collection, handling, and delivery to the main laboratory for analysis.
- Entering test orders and specimen information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Performing incidental clerical, cleaning, and supply duties.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Successful completion of an accredited Phlebotomy certification program.
- Registered or eligible with national certifying agencies such as NPA, NCA, ASPT, AMT, or ASCP.
- Must pass certification within 1 year of hire.
- One year of previous experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
- Medical Assistants do not need phlebotomy certification if part of their curriculum.
- MA certification must be maintained yearly.
