Position Summary
Are you looking for a team focused clerical role in a hospital nursing unit? Then St Catherine Hospital’s Unit Assistant position may be what you are looking for! The Unit Assistant performs general clerical duties and patient centered care activities. The Unit Assistant practices in accordance with current established standards of care, the Policies and Procedure of the Med Surg Unit, the Powers Health policies and procedures, and supports the mission and philosophy of Powers Health.
Job Responsibilities

- Courteously utilizes the hospital’s telephone communication system to accurately take and relay messages, give information when appropriate, transfer calls and locate physicians via cell/pager system.
- Acts as a receptionist to physicians, other personnel, patients, and visitors, and provides assistance to them as indicated. Maintains order and cleanliness of work stations.
- Rounds and communicates with patients and visitors.
- Assists in replacement of supplies and appropriate par levels: Stocking nurse servers, isolation cabinets, organization of clean storerooms, changing of needle boxes. Maintains supply of gloves and hand cleaning supplies in patient rooms. Maintains organization of Nurses’ Station.
- Assists in maintaining white boards in patient rooms and locator boards in each module.
- Notifies appropriate diagnostic departments of pending tests and/or dialysis for treatment when directed.
- Rounds to departments as requested/assigned (Laboratory, Blood Bank, Pharmacy, etc.).
- Transports patients for diagnostic testing or to floor as directed.
- Answers patient call lights and assist with passing and picking up meal trays.
- May function as patient sitter / companion.
- Performs, but is not limited to, the following duties: Maintains logs such as daily refrigerator temperatures. Maintains staff refrigerator, coffee equipment, and supplies. Obtains and distributes mail.
- Maintains the patient’s medical chart, label charts and records faxed information as directed.
Education/Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Supplemental commercial school/college courses in typing, computer technology and medical terminology are desired.
- Six-months experience as a unit clerk, certified nurse assistant, or medical assistant preferred.
- Satisfactory completion of hospital computer classes. Completion of EKG, vital signs and glucose training. Annual validation of skills, safety, and infection control.
