Summary :

Provides a comprehensive school counseling program addressing academic, career, and social emotional development for students through individual and group contacts. As a student advocate and as a member of the educational team, participates in a proactive manner to support, impact and enhance student learning. Consults and collaborates with teachers, administrators, support staff, families, and community resource persons; coordinates appropriate services for students, and serves as a liaison between school, community agencies and post-secondary opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

  • Collects and organizes pertinent data and implements a comprehensive school counseling program
  • Provides academic counseling to assist students and their parents in acquiring knowledge of the curricula choices available to students and to develop a personal learning plan and course of study
  • Provides career counseling to help students acquire information and plan action about work, jobs, apprenticeships, and post-secondary educational and career opportunities.
  • Acts as a leader in the development and implementation of the school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports framework
  • Provides social emotional counseling to assist students to develop an understanding of themselves, the rights and needs of others, how to resolve conflict and to define individual goals, reflecting their interests, abilities, and aptitudes.
  • Conducts academic, career, and social emotional core curriculum lessons and group counseling sessions
  • Acts as a case manager for students with 504 plans under the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Analyzes, synthesizes, interprets and disaggregates relevant data (including process, perception, and results data) to examine student outcomes and to identify and implement interventions that improve student achievement, attendance and behavior.
  • Works independently and collaboratively to analyze and interpret multiple sources of data to identify student learning needs, guide planning and instruction, and assess the effectiveness of instruction.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and share knowledge in a professional manner
  • Serves a vital role in maximizing student achievement, social and career development.
  • Serves as an advocate for the student.
  • Serves as a resource for students, parents / guardians, administrators and school staff.
  • Conducts school-wide programs specific to the needs of individual schools.
  • Collaborates / consults with parents, teachers, and administrators and school community resources concerning student issues.
  • Serves as a member of the Student Assistance Team, School Based Team, Eligibility, IEP, and Gifted Identification committees.
  • Assists students and parents with transitional tasks and issues
  • Supports the total school community by serving on school and division committees.
  • Assists with crisis intervention.
  • Provides information to students and parents regarding student opportunities such as enrichment programs, scholarships, special programs, etc.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, division, policy, and administrative procedures
  • Assist with grade reporting including report cards, interims, honor rolls, and transcripts
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional growth by seeking continuing education and professional development opportunities
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned by the superintendent, or designee.

Qualifications

Postgraduate certification / licensure / endorsement in Elementary, Middle, Secondary Counselor or School Counselor PK-12 by the Virginia Department of Education. (Pupil Personnel or Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement aligned with assignment.) Master's degree with emphasis in school counseling.

Counseling skills must include problem identification / analysis skills and brief solution resolution. Communications skills, both oral and written must be highly developed to meet the diverse needs of students, professional staff, and other community agencies. An applicant must be able to develop, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive, proactive school counseling program and document its impact on student achievement.

Education and / or Experience :

Minimum Master's Degree course of study in School Counseling.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or public.

Reasoning / Other Abilities

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

Physical Demands

Work involves operation of office equipment and limited physical tasks. Above-average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a classroom environment.

Evaluation

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel. Setting SMART goals and maintaining a Documentation Log are required methods of providing evidence of performance related to the specific performance standards required by the Code of Virginia.
