What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elder Nutrition Coordinator position at Prairie Island Indian Community?

SUMMARY:
The Elder Nutrition Coordinator is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, well-balanced meals for the elders. The role includes developing and planning seasonal/indigenous menus in accordance with the program guidelines. The coordinator will work closely and in collaboration with the nutritionist and/or dietitian to provide meals that promote health and wellness for the elders, considering specific needs like low sodium, low sugar, texture-modified diets, dietary restrictions, food preferences, and using standardized portion control procedures. The role includes ensuring food safety and sanitation standards are met, and maintaining a clean, organized kitchen. The coordinator is responsible for managing and planning the daily operations of the kitchen, menu/meal prep/service, and dining room oversight. Additionally, the coordinator will assist with inventory management and meal delivery, ensuring all food is prepared and served efficiently, as scheduled, and with the utmost care.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Responsible for collaborating with the nutritionist/dietitian in planning, organizing, modifying, and implementing seasonal and indigenous menus while following proper guidelines.
• Provides supervision of the Kitchen Aid and volunteers to ensure proper operations in the kitchen.
• Guides, supports, and serves the elders ensuring nutrition goals/requirements are met.
• Organizes and uses time management to accomplish assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
• Supports activities/events in the Tribal community and surrounding communities.
• Develops volunteer/staff to-do lists to ensure proper operations in the kitchen.
• Maintains food/equipment inventory, understands purchasing processes, ordering processes, and maintains records.
• Adheres to the Title VI Resources Manual and must meet required reporting deadlines in adherence to the Title VI Program.
• Ensures meals are accounted for according to established procedures and maintains monthly report for the Health Director.
• Files and organizes all paperwork in accordance with the funding and/or grant programs.
• Maintains high standards of sanitation and safety in the kitchen, adhering to local and state health department guidelines.
•Follows cleaning schedules and sanitation checklists to ensure kitchen and food service areas are maintained in a clean and sanitary condition. Includes completing and coordinating all clean-up duties after each meal service.
• Observes and reports any problems, concerns, or issues regarding the Elders Nutrition Program and/or the Elder Center facility.
• Responsible for meeting with the Nutritionist on a regular basis regarding meals and nutrition education.
• Completes and coordinates all clean-up duties after each meal service.
• Always uphold confidentiality.
• Attends required training and maintains certifications as needed and/or directed.
• Visits with Elders in dining room to ensure satisfaction with meals being served and obtains feedback.
• Prepares and serves a wide range of foods that are fresh, and many meals are made from scratch.
• Knowledge of rules and regulations of health and safety in food preparation.
• Assist elders when needed and deliver elder meals as needed.
• General understanding of the needs of elders, willingness to learn and to teach others, as well as accept constructive criticism.
• Promotes healthy living by being a positive role model.
• Must be flexible and willing to assume other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• High school diploma or GED
• Must have two or more years of cooking experience, experience cooking for large groups of people, and nutrition knowledge to accommodate the different dietary needs of our elders.
• Must have experience preparing special diets including low sodium, low cholesterol, diabetic, and vegetarian.
• Experience working in a Native American/Indigenous community.
• Minimum of (1) years working with Elders.
• Must possess a strong understanding and desire to build rapport with our Elders in an environment that upholds their privacy, dignity, choice, independence, and individuality.
• Must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, elders, and community members.
• Must be able to work under minimal supervision.
• Must possess strong organizational skills.
• Must possess leadership skills including problem solving and confidence in decision making.
• Must be able to accurately use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and proof of insurance.
• Must be able to perform tasks physically and mentally, as verified by a health screening/physical exam and must be free of communicable disease.
• Must pass background check and pre-employment screenings.
• Must be CPR certified or must receive within 90 days.
• Must complete Food Handlers and Serve Safe certifications within 30 days.
PREFERRED:
- Vocational/technical training/education/degree
- Cooking experience in a similar environment
· Scratch cooking experience
*PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to stand long periods of time with occasional amounts of walking.
REQUIRED TRAINING:
- Effectively Handling Harassment training
- Any position-related training as determined by department manager
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed primarily in an office setting, but may include occasional outdoor activities
