Part Time Fill-In Corrections Counselor
Prairie Lakes Youth Programs (PLYP) is hiring part-time Corrections Staff for our secure residential detention and corrections programs, located in Willmar, Minnesota. As a Corrections Staff, you will be responsible for the daily safety, security, and supervision of and interaction with residents. You will support the goal to create and maintain a positive therapeutic environment. The Corrections Staff will draw on the resident’s behavioral expressions to develop healthy options for the residents as well as providing support and encouragement for positive actions. This position included planning and implementing recreation activities, guiding group activities, teaching independent living skills, and assisting in any other individualized or group programming for the residents.
Toledo’s Passage and Leo's Legacy are structured juvenile detention center secure programs located on the main Prairie Lakes Youth Programs campus in Willmar. This setting supports residents with dignity through our structured environment while they work toward stabilization and safety.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Maintain safety, security, and physical custody of youth within the locked and secured campus.
- Participates in daily activities of residents by personally interacting with them to provide leadership, training, role modeling, correction, boundary setting, life skills, communication, and interpersonal relationship skills.
- Leads and directs residents in activities designed to promote social interaction, reality orientation and intellectual stimulation that support a trauma informed care treatment modality. Maintains sufficient activity supplies. Develops a monthly calendar of planned activities.
- Monitors resident’s activities to ensure that residents are participating in all required program curriculum.
- Completes documentation and forwards reports containing descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content.
- Follows all applicable regulations and standards in regard to program requirements and assigned duties.
- Transports/escorts residents to and from medical appointments following secure protocol
- Completes behavior logs for residents.
- Supervises residents during mealtime, snack times, assists with counting and the tracking of sharps utilized in the facility.
- Makes sure residents observe all appointments, therapies, meetings, community service, and other scheduled activities.
- Provide medication as prescribed by medical team.
- Inspects living spaces as needed to report on conditions affecting the health and safety of residents as well as to locate contraband.
- Serves as a member of a treatment team to determine which programs, methods, and experiences are appropriate for the treatment of the residents.
- Receives detailed instructions from supervisors and professionals on the treatment strategies and techniques to be followed for individual residents.
- Observes, records and reports health symptoms, behavior, and other significant issues of the residents.
- Assists with laundry, clerical and cleaning tasks as needed and assigned.
- Complete the resident’s bedroom inspection checklists regulatory and follow up with any required action items.
- Other duties as assigned.
