BACKGROUND:
Prairie Lakes Youth Programs (PLYP) is located in Willmar, Minnesota and is a children’s residential facility licensed by the Department of Corrections for males and females ages 10-21. Our programs include a juvenile detention center, juvenile residential corrections program, non-secure program, boys group home, and girls group home.
In our children’s residential facility, we meet our youth where they are at- supporting through individualization with our continuum of services. We provide a therapeutic and cultural approach with art, gardening, pet therapy, substance use disorder treatment, cultural & diverse connections, spiritual resources, and more- all while healing trauma with safety and security. At PLYP, we have ignited youth dignity since 1991.
JOB SUMMARY:
In this corrections work, our Juvenile Corrections Officers (JCO) work in a juvenile corrections and detention facility. Our JCOs help youth, making a difference in their lives through providing the safety, security, and care for youth in custody, monitor youth well-being by conducting well-being checks, supervise youth activities/programming, complete daily documentation, and perform other related duties as assigned.
The JCO ensures PLYP continues to work with an above-and-beyond approach in all that we do with dignity, ensuring compliance and best practices within our specified targeted youth population and guiding our youth within our trauma-minded, culturally sensitive, and department of corrections programs. These duties will be completed as a part of our team through supporting youth.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Participates in providing for the custody, safety, security, and wellbeing of youth within the locked and secure campus
- Maintains order ensuring sight and sound supervision of youth, monitoring all movement of youth within the facility, and maintaining orderly conduct of youth and visitors
- Inspects living units to locate contraband and to report on conditions affecting the health and safety of the youth
- Conducts security/perimeter checks and youth headcounts
- Complete wellness checks on youth in accordance with state law and PLYP policy, frequently checks on youth deemed to be special risks or who are on security status
- Provides guidance and instruction to youth by participating in daily activities with youth and personally interacting with them to demonstrate leadership, communication, boundary setting, life skills, accountability, problem solving, correction
- Lead, supervise and direct youth in activities designed to promote pro-social interactions and intellectual stimulation such as recreation time, leisure activities, groups, and program obligations utilizing a trauma informed care treatment modality
- Transport youth to appointments, court proceedings, and/or other appointments following secure protocol
- Make sure all youth attend necessary appointments, therapy/treatment sessions, meetings, court appearances, and other scheduled activities
- Provide for the care of youth including meals/snacks and healthcare, supply youth with clean clothing and hygiene items
- Distribute medication to youth as prescribed by their medical teams
- Effective communication with youth, co-workers, administration, parents and professionals. (Examples: Law Enforcement, Probation Officers, Social Workers)
- Observes, records and report behaviors, health symptoms, and other significant issues with youth
- Assist with laundry, clerical and cleaning tasks as needed and assigned
- Assume the responsibility of being a mandated reporter by Minnesota State Law
- Follows all applicable regulations and standards regarding program requirements and assigned duties

- Conduct self in a courteous, tactful, and professional manner

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Work is performed in and around a Department of Corrections juvenile correctional and detention facility
- Subject to standing, bending, walking, reaching, kneeling, crouching
- Ability to walk up and down stairs
- Lifting objects, at times over 50 pounds
- Ability to learn and use de-escalation and proper procedures (Controlled Force MACH)
- Potential to work with non-compliant youth
- As a correctional facility we operate 365 days, 24/7, you will be required to work a rotation of weekends and holidays

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
- At least 21 years of age at the time of employment start
- Successfully complete required background check
- Successfully complete annual Mantoux testing
- Must have a valid Minnesota driver’s license
