Position Summary
The Vice President, Student Affairs is the chief student services officer and executive-level diversity officer of the College. The position is responsible for providing executive leadership, strategic planning, administrative direction, operational, fiscal, personnel management, and evaluation in the areas of enrollment management (admissions, records and registration, financial aid), campus police, career services, academic advising, student life and leadership, military student affairs, TRIO programs, disability services, equity and inclusion, student success center, transfer and personal counseling, first-year experience and athletics. The Vice President works closely with the Chief Academic Officer to ensure coordination between student and instructional services programs that support student success. The Vice President also serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet, and serves as a principal advisor to the President on a range of college leadership matters.
Reporting and Supervisory Relationships
1. Direct reporting relationship to the College President.
2. Direct supervisory relationship with Dean of Enrollment Management; Dean of Students Success, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Diversity; Director of Athletics; Chief of Police; and Executive Assistant to the Vice President.
3. Indirect supervisory relationship with unit support staff employees.
Essential Responsibilities
The Vice President, Student Affairs has duties and responsibilities that include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Plans and establishes philosophies and goals for the unit and prepares and implements them in the context of the College’s strategic plan.
2. Oversees the effective operation and delivery of services to students for admissions, academic advising, enrollment and registration, education records, tutoring, testing, counseling, and financial aid.
3. Proposes, justifies, and monitors all student services budgets.
4. Oversees the effective recruitment, hiring, supervision, and evaluation of all student services and campus police personnel.
5. Oversees, addresses, and resolves problems, grievances, and complaints related to student rights and responsibilities, student threat and care assessment, and student grievance policies.
6. Establishes and maintains student conduct policies and judicial due process to ensure a safe and secure campus environment; publishes the student handbook and other student affairs documents.
7. Plans, promotes, implements and supervises all student life programs and student organizations and activities, including multicultural programming and opportunities for student orientation, leadership, volunteerism, and achievement.
8. Oversees student events such as commencement and other recognition activities.
9. Responds to questions from college departments and external agencies regarding complex issues or policies impacting student programs and services.
10. Develops and maintains policies and procedures for all areas of student services.
11. Participates as necessary in all federal and state reporting of student data and reports.
12. Attends Board, Cabinet, and other meetings as appropriate and prepares recommendations and supporting documentation as needed.
13. Promotes useful research, data-gathering, and analysis related to student services, student enrollment, retention, and student outcomes.
14. Represents the College in local, state, and national professional organizations and establishes linkages with appropriate local, regional, and state resources and agencies and public groups.
15. Ensures the development and execution of campus safety programming, services, reporting, compliance, and interventions.
16. Monitors state and federal legislation and regulatory matters which impact students.
17. Performs other professional and administrative duties assigned by the President.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Employee is subject to indoor work, protected from weather conditions. Work is sedentary in nature and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently/constantly in order to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Master Degree in Student Services, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
2. At least five years of senior level administrative experience in student services in higher education.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with the operational functions and administrative responsibilities in a community college and student affairs environment.
4. Prior experience leading reaccreditation efforts.
5. Strong human relations skills.
6. Strong written and oral communication skills.
7. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
8. Knowledge of computer software applications in student affairs.
9. Knowledge of federal, state, and local statutes related to higher education and student affairs.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Doctorate in student services, Student personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
2. Previous experience as a Chief Student Affairs Officer.
