English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher
Purpose Statement
The purpose of an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher is to instruct non-English speaking individuals on the fundamentals of the English language so that they can communicate with others. This includes organizing courses for non-native speakers with diverse activities and methods that cover all aspects of the English language (speaking, writing, and comprehending). As a teacher in our school, you’ll create individualized educational plans based on each student’s needs.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Meet teacher certification requirements and English as a K-12 Second Language (ESL) of the Department of Education, State of Iowa
- Successful experience in teaching secondary students learning English as a second language
- Previous experience in collaborating with department/grade level teams to support English Learners
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
Essential Functions
- Provides consultative/coaching support to classroom teachers on EL strategies and meeting the needs of ELs in the general education setting.
- Demonstrates ability to enhance academic performance.
- Demonstrates competence in content knowledge appropriate to the teaching position.
- Demonstrates competence in planning and preparing for instruction.
- Uses strategies to deliver instruction that meets the multiple learning needs of students.
- Uses a variety of methods to monitor student learning.
- Demonstrates competence in classroom management.
- Engages in professional growth.
- Fulfills professional responsibilities established by the school district
- Performs other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the Superintendent or Principal.
Other Functions
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Directs associates, student teachers, and/or volunteers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Working Environment
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
Responsibility
