Job Description
The Police Sergeant, under direction, supervises officers and police personal and enforces, prevents, and investigates violations of the law and University rules and regulations.
This position may pay more than the salary listed above depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
Responsibilities:
- Supervises assigned police officers and personnel. Evaluates, counsels and advises subordinates. Approves subordinate leave. Examines and approves reports and case files submitted by subordinates. May supervise a squad of security officers at special events. May function as a police sergeant in any sergeant's position within the department.
- Disseminates administrative directives and policies and ensures implementation. Patrols campus and acts as a point of contact for other agencies.
- Investigates offenses and arrests offenders of State Criminal Law and Transportation Code violations. Prepares comprehensive reports. Provides professional skills to in-service seminars and training of subordinate officers. Manages crime scenes and evidence collection and processing.
- Attends meetings with other departments on and off campus. Performs administrative duties. May serve as a member of committees, recruit officer review and officer promotion boards.
- Testifies in Justice of the Peace Court as well as County and District Courts and student judicial hearings. Interacts with the public by speaking on various topics dealing with law enforcement and community policing.
Required Education & Experience
- Education - High School diploma or GED. 45 college credit hours from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and experience. (Each year of continuous experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer in the state of Texas and/or each year of active duty in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces may be substituted for ten (10) college credit hours. A maximum of 30 college credit hours may be substituted. A minimum of 15 college credit hours from an accredited college or university is required.)
- Experience - The specified number of years of law enforcement experience required for intermediate certification as defined by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification system, including two years experience as a Police Officer in campus law enforcement at an institution of higher education.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Must be able to work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population.
- Ability to function under adverse and stressful conditions.
Required Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:
- Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) intermediate or advanced certification.
- Must have a State of Texas class 'C' vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Other Requirements:
- All system university police will be required to meet minimum licensing standard requirements as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) § 217.1.
- Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
- Applicants must pass an entrance exam to be considered for employment. Applicants must successfully pass psychological evaluation, physical examination, and complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background, and credit history.
- Must be in excellent physical health and stamina.
