DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Administrator/Director of Education (DOE), the Special Education-Transition Specialist provides appropriate and meaningful transition activities to post-secondary work, educational programs, and life activities. The Special Education-Transition Specialist plans, delivers, and monitors the transition services for all students with disabilities. Troubleshoots all problems related to Workability. Complete all reports, budgets, and attend required meetings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drafts written guidance for all staff who participate on IEP teams on how to evaluate transition needs and develops transition plans in compliance with federal and state legal standards
- Disseminates guidance to all staff who participate on IEP team meetings for students who are 16 years or older.
- Reviews each 12th grade student’s IEP to ensure that it includes a transition plan individually tailored to meet the student’s needs in accordance with federal legal standards and the District’s policies and procedures.
- Determines whether the students’ IEPs include transition plans that were developed in accordance with federal legal standards and the District’s policies and procedures at the students’ next scheduled IEP.
- Participates as a member of the District Office of Transition Services team.
- Collects, provides data, and reports on students with disabilities receiving transition services
- Implements District guidelines, programs and procedures to provide compliant transition planning and service delivery for students with disabilities.
- Presents and coordinates staff development programs.
- Utilizes technology programs to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
- Plan for and assist in training staff to ensure accurate data collection.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Administrator or Designee
- Teach and instruct the content core curriculum utilizing the State Framework, the state-adopted standards, and the District curriculum adopted by the Board of Education.
- Assess ability and provide each exceptional student with a program that will enable him/her to reach his/her fullest physical, emotional, psychological, educational and behavioral potential.
- Prepare a planned program utilizing individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Serve as a member of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team and assist in the development of Individualized Education Program(s) for students with exceptional needs.
- Confer frequently with support personnel to provide needed services regarding the educational, social, and personal concerns of students with exceptional needs.
- Provide consultation services to students, parents, teachers or other school personnel as appropriate.
- Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the PHA and in voluntary self-growth.
- Keep attendance records and all other records pertinent to the program for state reports and program accountability.
- Maintain appropriate standards of pupil behavior, using behavioral management strategies and techniques, including positive reinforcement and behavior shaping procedures.
- Counsel, confer with, and communicate with parents, school, and PHA personnel regarding pupil progress and in the interpretation of the educational program.
- Plan and coordinate the work of assigned classroom leads and BI’s.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Administrator or Designee
QUALIFICATIONS:
Laws governing Special Education, principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of special needs students; academic, social, and behavioral characteristics; techniques and procedures regarding curriculum and instruction design and delivery systems for both Special Education and district CORE curriculum; program evaluation strategies; behavior management and behavior shaping strategies, techniques and methods; conflict resolution procedures; social-economic and cultural background differences of the school population; and team building methods and techniques.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Plan, organize, develop, and conduct a comprehensive teaching and instruction program for special needs students.
- Provide appropriate and effective learning experiences for pupils from a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
- Effectively assess the educational needs of pupils, design, develop, and implement sound instructional and educational programs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Pay: $62,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
