Job Description

SUMMARY: Operates or assists in the operation of vacuum furnaces which includes furnace set-up, loading molds, carrying metal charges and removing ceramic shell material from castings.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:


  • Furnace Operator - Operates vacuum furnace which includes setting up the furnace for operation and loading molds that can weigh up to 110 lbs (molds over 50 lbs require lift assistance). Loads metal charges weighing in excess of 90 lbs (charges over 50 lbs require lift assistance). Monitors temperature, flow, power, pressure gages and makes adjustments to meet process specification. Charts results from each heat on control chart and fills out heat log. Ability to reason and troubleshoot issues, notify foreman and/or process engineering of any process variations. Has to manually clean the vacuum furnace at certain intervals.
  • Furnace Helper – Assists the furnace operator in loading and unloading molds weighing up to 110 lbs (molds over 50 lbs require lift assistance) while wearing protective clothing. Carrying molds with molten metal and placing on cooling carts. Set up molds and operate preheat furnace to ensure molds are at the correct temperature and are properly prepared prior to casting.
  • Knockout – Removes ceramic shell material from metal castings either manually with a hammer or mechanically per individual FR procedure.
  • Wrap – Cutting and wrapping molds with heat insulating material (kaowool blanket) prior to mold pouring. Cut and measure heat-insulating material and apply to the mold using adhesive. Lift molds up to 50 lbs or molds greater than 50 with lift assistance from mold cart to wrap table and vice versa. All wrap to be placed on mold per individual FR procedure.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.


QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:


Position requires high school diploma or general education degree (GED); at least one year manufacturing experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedures. Ability to communicate production information both in writing and verbally. Ability to complete required production reports and SPC charts.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.


REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several airfoil casting variables in standardized situations.


OTHER QUALIFICATION:
Regular attendance and the ability to work weekday and weekend overtime.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is required to sit, occasionally walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk and/or hear. The employee sits 50% of the workday. The employee must frequently lift up to 50 pounds without lift assist. Lifting above 50 pounds will require the use of lift assist or help. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with the company requiring hearing protection to be worn. Eye protection including side shields is required. Safety shoes are required as well as other area specific personal protective equipment
