Job Description
Principle Responsibilities
A pipe welder, also known as a pipeline welder or pipe-liner plays a crucial role in repairing, joining, and assembling metallic pipe components. Their work involves ensuring the integrity of pipelines and piping systems.
Standard Duties
Familiarity with various welding processes, including Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW).
Repairing industrial equipment, removing, and replacing pipe and fabricating pipe components.
Identifying the source of problems, making repairs, replacing parts, and reassembling systems.
Installing and fabricating pipelines using brazing, soldering, and welding techniques.
Inspecting installed pipelines and systems for potential defects.
Managing materials, supplies, and welding equipment.
Installing and repairing gas pressure regulators and related devices.
Cleaning and modifying pipe units, fittings, and systems.
Requirements
Education: Candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent. Some may have completed welding programs through the U.S. Armed Forces.
Experience: A minimum of one year of steel pipe welding experience is preferred.
Certification: Having a certificate in pipe welding, welding, and metal fabrication is beneficial.
Capabilities
Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Pipe welders need good communication skills to interact with colleagues and supervisors effectively.
Calculative Skills: General mathematical skills are essential for adjusting metal lengths, trimming piping precisely, and calculating dimensions.
Critical Thinking: Interpreting blueprints and schematics require critical thinking abilities.
Physical Requirements
The employee must have the ability perform light to heavy lifting and positioning of work pieces up to seventy pounds, standing, bending, stooping, utilizing overhead cranes, pallet jacks, constant standing, walking, and working in awkward positions, and may periodically exposed to high noise levels.
