Key Responsibilities
- Patient Assessment and Care
- Evaluate patients with breathing disorders by conducting diagnostic tests, such as lung capacity measurements and blood gas analysis.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatments as necessary based on clinical findings and physician directives.
- Therapeutic Interventions
- Administer treatments such as oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, chest physiotherapy, and mechanical ventilation.
- Perform airway management procedures, including intubation and tracheostomy care.
- Diagnostic Testing
- Conduct pulmonary function tests to assess lung performance.
- Obtain and analyze arterial blood gas samples to evaluate oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH levels.
- Education and Support
- Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions and the proper use of equipment, such as inhalers or home ventilators.
- Provide guidance on lifestyle changes to improve respiratory health, such as smoking cessation or exercise routines.
- Collaboration and Documentation
- Work closely with the healthcare team to create and revise patient care plans.
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, documenting treatments, outcomes, and observations.
- Education:
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care or a related field.
- Licensure and Certification:
- Current state licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).
- Credentialed as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications (may vary by employer).
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of respiratory care techniques, equipment, and medical terminology.
- Proficient in critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making.
- Effective communication and patient interaction skills.
- Work may involve exposure to infectious diseases and require adherence to strict safety protocols.
- Requires physical stamina to perform tasks such as lifting or positioning patients and standing for extended periods.
- Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required depending on the healthcare setting.
