Preferred Primary Care Physicians is currently recruiting for a full-time Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist for our practice located in the Uniontown, PA. The ideal candidate will have both back office and front office medical assistant skills/experience as well as experience with referrals, prior authorizations, and rooming/discharging patients. This is a full-time, non-exempt, hourly position with M-F daylight hours. General Purpose of the Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist Position: Responsible for assisting physicians and nurses with patient care, clerical, environmental and organizational tasks. May assist with appointment scheduling and electronic chart management.
Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist Essential Functions:
- Escorts patients to and from exam or treatment rooms as appropriate. Records all patient data prior to the physician or nurse seeing the patient. This includes vital signs, height and weight, allergies, medications, chief complaint, reason for visit, etc.
- Administers subcutaneous and intramuscular injections as directed by the physician.
- Obtains all necessary patient record information, lab data, diagnostics, consults, etc. as required by the physician or nurse for assessment of the patient's medical status.
- Obtains blood specimens from peripheral sites as needed in accordance with OSHA and universal safety precautions
- Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
- Verifies patient by reading patient identification.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
- Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
- Performs bleeding-times tests by entering results to the computer; notifying pathologist of results falling outside normal ranges.
- Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Assists with exams and procedures as requested.
- Answers and returns patient phone calls as directed. Is responsible for contacting pharmacies for prescriptions or may answer patient telephone calls for referrals. May handle other patient telephone calls as directed by the physician, nurse or Office Manager.
- Assists with scheduling tests, procedures or appointments to follow-up on test results
- Prepares, maintains and stocks exam and treatment rooms. Orders supplies as needed.
- Obtains new patient information and any test results.
- Assists with administrative duties such as typing, faxing, reception duties, etc.
- Processes instruments and equipment as needed.
- Informs physician of patient reschedule or no-shows.
- Assists with delegated patient education activities including but not limited to distributing educational literature, etc.
- Maintains the strictest confidentiality.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the physician, nurse or office manager.
Education:
A high school diploma or GED is required. Graduate from an accredited school of medical assistant. Six (6) months of medical assistant experience in a medical practice setting preferred, however open to new graduate applicants.
