What are the responsibilities and job description for the Allergy Technician position at Premier Medical Group?
SUMMARY OF JOB:
To provide accurate and timely laboratory test results. To participate in quality control and quality assurance of laboratory as required by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988. To insure optimal care and treatment of allergy patients.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Interprets laboratory test results to insure all control and patient test results are within normal/acceptable ranges.
2. Performs maintenance on laboratory equipment as outlined in procedure manuals - documenting such maintenance as required.
3. Assists department supervisor in performance of all quality control/assurance measures required to maintain laboratory certification under federal regulations as mandated by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988.
4. Troubleshoots laboratory equipment failures, working with technical support department of vendors to resolve.
5. Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies for tests performed.
6. Prepares allergy treatment injections.
7. Recognizes the signs and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction and is prepared to initiate appropriate emergency responses. (Annual recertification in basic life saving skills is required.)
8. Administers intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections.
9. Performs venipuncture, fingersticks and Ivy bleed times as directed by physician(s).
10. Is knowledgeable of and efficiently operates the Company’s electronic medical records system without error.
11. Receives and accurately documents patient telephone requests for allergy treatment injections.
12. Discusses or reviews patient questions and concerns – either through telephone or direct conversation in office – selecting those personally qualified to answer, identifying when referral to supervisor or physician is necessary.
13. Orally reviews and accurately documents allergy patient progress reports.
14. Schedules patients for skin testing and vial testing appointments.
15. Operates the computer terminal in department to review patient account balances, insurance benefits, updates patient information and obtains fee tickets for charging allergy services performed.
16. Files permanent allergy charts and additional written information that is maintained in the department.
17. Is responsible for knowing the work schedule, observing work hours and maintaining a good attendance record. (See attached attendance and punctuality requirements.)
18. Attends in-service programs and maintains continuing education credits as directed or required for certification and licensure requirements.
19. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patients, employees, supervisors and the public. Exemplifies the Company’s Five Star Program.
20. Follows all corporate and departmental policies and procedures and complies with the Employee Handbook.
21. Performs other tasks as needed or directed.

DEGREE OF SUPERVISION:
Performs duties under direct, indirect, periodic and general supervision.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
A. Accountability: Reports directly to the Supervisor of Allergy.
B. Education or Training: Must be a graduate of an accredited high school. Graduation form an accredited School for Medical Assistants is preferred, but not required.
C. Knowledge and Experience: Testing personnel performing non-waived (moderately complex) tests must have a high school diploma and documentation of training appropriate for the level of testing. They must perform proficiency testing and be reviewed by the Medical Director annually to insure competency.
D. Dexterity: Must have good manual dexterity for pipetting patient samples and test reagents.
E. Accuracy: Must be able to transcribe information received from patients. Must have basic mathematical skills to include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Should be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
F. Physical Activity: Physical activity involves keying, writing, reaching, carrying, looking, listening, talking, bending, lifting, kneeling, stooping, grasping, climbing, standing, walking, and sitting, resulting in medium work.
G. Exertion Requirements: Medium - must be able to exert force to lift and carry from 20 to 50 pounds up to 10 feet occasionally, from 10 to 15 pounds of force up to 10 feet frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to walk, stand or sit to a significant degree depending on task requirements.
H. Working Conditions: Works in an office setting, which is well lighted, ventilated
and temperature regulated. Automobile travel may be required.
Must be able to concentrate on work tasks amidst distractions, such as noise, conversations and foot traffic.
Must be able to work in a confined area performing repetitive work for extended periods of time.
I. Hazards or Risks: Certain biological and chemical hazards are present in department, requiring the use of personal protective equipment and engineering controls.
J. Worker Characteristics: Must have responsible, ethical and professional manner with the
ability to listen, learn, plan and organize. Must be able to communicate effectively with people of different races, sexes, ages and social classes. Must be able to make independent decisions that may affect patient care, based on prior training provided by clinic in areas of assigned responsibility.
K. Non-performance Requirements: Appropriate training/background to perform non-waived (moderately complex) laboratory tests as required by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988. Must have a valid driver’s license or picture identification and a Social Security card or work. Bi-annual certification/recertification in basic life saving skills is required.
