Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Mortgage Underwriting Director to lead and manage our underwriting team. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of mortgage industry regulations, underwriting guidelines, and risk management, along with a proven track record of managing teams in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. This role is crucial for ensuring our underwriting processes meet the highest standards of accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the underwriting department, overseeing a team of underwriters and support staff.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain underwriting policies and procedures in line with company goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all loan applications are underwritten in accordance with industry guidelines, including FHA, VA, USDA, conventional, and jumbo loans.
  • Oversee the risk management process to identify and mitigate underwriting risks while ensuring high-quality loan production.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment that emphasizes continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Monitor and evaluate team performance, providing coaching, feedback, and training as needed.
  • Review complex and high-value loan files, offering expert guidance and decision-making support.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as Sales, Operations, and Compliance, to ensure seamless loan processing and timely closings.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, regulatory changes, and underwriting best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including investor and insurer requirements.
  • Provide regular reporting to senior management on department performance, productivity, and issues.
  • Promote a culture of employee ownership and engagement, consistent with PMR’s core values.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or related field (preferred).
  • 8 years of mortgage underwriting experience with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting guidelines, regulations, and risk management practices.
  • Ability to make complex underwriting decisions while ensuring compliance with all relevant policies.
  • Proven ability to manage and develop teams, fostering a collaborative and performance-driven environment.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong knowledge of mortgage loan products, including conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, and jumbo loans.
  • Proficiency in mortgage loan software and underwriting tools (e.g., DU, LP, etc.).
  • Leadership skills with a focus on employee engagement and development.
Preferred Skills:
  • Certification as an Underwriting Specialist (CMB, AU, etc.) is a plus.
  • In-depth understanding of compliance regulations and investor-specific guidelines.
