We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Mortgage Underwriting Director to lead and manage our underwriting team. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of mortgage industry regulations, underwriting guidelines, and risk management, along with a proven track record of managing teams in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. This role is crucial for ensuring our underwriting processes meet the highest standards of accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the underwriting department, overseeing a team of underwriters and support staff.
- Develop, implement, and maintain underwriting policies and procedures in line with company goals and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure all loan applications are underwritten in accordance with industry guidelines, including FHA, VA, USDA, conventional, and jumbo loans.
- Oversee the risk management process to identify and mitigate underwriting risks while ensuring high-quality loan production.
- Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment that emphasizes continuous improvement and professional development.
- Monitor and evaluate team performance, providing coaching, feedback, and training as needed.
- Review complex and high-value loan files, offering expert guidance and decision-making support.
- Collaborate with other departments, such as Sales, Operations, and Compliance, to ensure seamless loan processing and timely closings.
- Stay up to date with industry trends, regulatory changes, and underwriting best practices.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including investor and insurer requirements.
- Provide regular reporting to senior management on department performance, productivity, and issues.
- Promote a culture of employee ownership and engagement, consistent with PMR’s core values.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or related field (preferred).
- 8 years of mortgage underwriting experience with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of underwriting guidelines, regulations, and risk management practices.
- Ability to make complex underwriting decisions while ensuring compliance with all relevant policies.
- Proven ability to manage and develop teams, fostering a collaborative and performance-driven environment.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organization.
- Strong knowledge of mortgage loan products, including conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, and jumbo loans.
- Proficiency in mortgage loan software and underwriting tools (e.g., DU, LP, etc.).
- Leadership skills with a focus on employee engagement and development.
- Certification as an Underwriting Specialist (CMB, AU, etc.) is a plus.
- In-depth understanding of compliance regulations and investor-specific guidelines.
