As a Senior Manager of Data Engineering, you will help our company solve their most challenging problems and drive decisions with data. In this role, you will deliver value by providing technical leadership in data engineering to support Enterprise Intelligence for PNC. Responsibilities include managing and coaching data engineers, leading continuous improvement for data engineering, enhancing and optimizing our data operation excellence, collaborating with business teams to design and implement data solutions that promote Enterprise Intelligence tools and reports, supporting corporate Enterprise Intelligence initiatives, and supporting leadership teams in crafting and executing the company’s data and analytics strategies.

If you're based in the greater Bay Area, you'll walk into our Emeryville office each Tuesday morning and start the in-person portion of our hybrid work week at our weekly all-company meeting and find close to 200 of your colleagues sitting on sofas, beanbag chairs, or the floor excitedly talking through the week ahead and watching a newer teammate tell their personal life and career journey followed by a quick update on any hot topics that might be relevant to the week ahead.

Manage and Develop a Data Engineering Team: 40% of your time
- Build a strong data engineering team by leading and inspiring team members in their performance and responsibilities.
- Mentor and coach team members, aligning their personal and professional goals with growth opportunities.
- Oversee effective and timely resourcing, onboarding, knowledge transfer, and team member acclimation to the environment and objectives.
- Work with cross-functional teams to manage multiple work streams and ensure alignment with business goals.
- Work with our data operation managed service provider to ensure proper resource allocation and support for data engineering projects.
- Advocate for data quality, data architecture, and process optimization, fostering innovation within the team and across projects.
Provide Hands-On Tech Leadership for Data Architecture and Data Pipelines: 40% of your time
- Drive initiatives to modernize the data landscape (data warehousing, data lakes) using platforms like Snowflake and Azure, design and deploy data pipeline changes to support upstream system migration.
- Participate in defining and refining technical solutions, architecture improvements, and ensuring quality through code reviews.
- Oversee and participate in the design and implementation of data pipelines, including ETL processes, database schema, data modeling, and dimensional models using tools such as FiveTran and DBT.
- Administer Snowflake security strategy, manage database schemas/tables/views, and deploy across multiple environments (DEV, QA/UAT, PROD).
- Proactively identify opportunities to enhance the effectiveness and operational efficiencies of the Data Engineering team.
- Work with our data operation managed service provider to enhance and optimize our DataOps operational excellence in production data pipeline, incident troubleshooting, and database performance.
Support Company’s Data & Analytics Strategies: 20% of your time
- Support company’s co-pilot model by developing and implementing data strategies aligned with business requirements.
- Build strong partnerships with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams, ensuring that data solutions meet business needs and contribute to overall organizational objectives.
- Play a key role in shaping and guiding data governance, policies, and strategy that contribute to our centralized enterprise intelligence and other company “big rock” initiatives.
What are we looking for?
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related technical disciplines.
Experience
- 10 years of experience in data engineering, designing and managing scalable data platforms/ecosystems, and delivering high quality data solutions to support company’s business intelligence and analytics initiatives.
- 5 years of leadership experience, including leading data engineering teams.
- Proven track record of successfully recruiting, developing, and retaining talent.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, with 7 years of experience in designing efficient queries and managing large datasets.
- Proficiency in Python, Scala or other scripting language(s).
- 7 years of experience with various data warehouses such as Snowflake.
- 7 years of data quality experience with troubleshooting data issues and identifying root causes of performance bottlenecks.
- 7 years of experience using one or more ETL/ELT or Transformation tools such as Informatica, FiveTran, DBT.
- 5 years of experience using Gitlab/Github.
- Expertise in data warehouse and data solution design, including architecting and optimizing data models, ETL processes, query optimization, building and maintaining data pipelines to ensure efficient data ingestion, transformation, and retrieval.
- Expertise in data modeling strategies and related technical documentation, including strong knowledge of data model types and test scenarios.
- Proficiency in complex relational database development, maintenance, and exception testing.
- Experience with data governance standards, including data security, quality, and lineage to ensure reliable BI solutions.
- Good understanding of SDLC/RDLC/DCLC, waterfall, and agile methodologies, applying them in projects and system configuration enhancements.
- Experience working with data integration tools (Dell Boomi, Files.com, etc.) for ingesting as well as distributing data files.
- API, SFTP, or other data integration experience.
- Experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) to build and manage modern data ecosystems.
- Strong knowledge with at least one key BI market tool (Tableau, SAP BO, Oracle BI, MS Power BI).
- Experience managing incidents, projects, change control in enterprise service management systems (Jira, ServiceNow, etc.)
- Knowledge with enterprise resource planning (ERP) software packages (SAP, Oracle, etc.)
- Must be willing to be on call for night/weekend production support in rare cases.
