SUMMARY:  The Telecommunications Tower Technician 2’s responsibility is to build and install telecommunications equipment on customer job sites, perform testing, and assist with all related tasks  under direct supervision from a Telecommunications Tower Antenna & Line Lead or Foreman. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Builds, installs, decommissions, assembles, and modifies telecom equipment and troubleshoots existing sites
  • Prepares radios, climbs towers, sets RET’s, azimuths, down tilts, connects conduit, pulls wire, builds/tests jumpers, and terminates fibers, coax, and AC & DC voltages
  • Routes cabling including coax, dc power cable and fiber optic cable according to site documentation and schematics
  • Reads plans and construction drawings 
  • Performs basic crane signaling to direct lifting and moving of equipment
  • Verifies that required materials are on the job site, identifies missing materials and informs Foreman as needed
  • Assists in performing job site system tests including, PIM, SWEEP, Fiber OTDR and optical power/light testing
  • Performs work on ground, in structures, inside/outside buildings, on rooftops and in crawl spaces
  • Cleans and organizes work environment
  • Maintains and upkeeps equipment and tools
  • Other duties as assigned

  • In addition to the above, other required qualifications for this role are: 
  1. 1 years’ experience as Telecommunications Tower Technician or similar role
    • Demonstrated ability to successfully work independently with minimal supervision
    • Understanding of radio frequency, wireless systems including RRH’s, antennas, Diplexers, TMA’s, 4G & 5G networks, and familiarity with all carrier standards
    • Ability to learn and perform jobsite systems tests including, PIM, SWEEP, TDR fiber, and read  power meters
    • Ability to build, install, decommission, assemble, and modify telecom equipment, as well as troubleshoot existing sites
    • Ability to prepare radios, climb the tower, set RET’s, azimuths, down tilts, connect conduit, pull wire, build/test jumpers, and terminate fibers, coax, and AC & DC voltages 
    • Basic understanding of cable routing and layout that includes but not limited to coax, fiber, etc.
    • Basic knowledge of crane operators and lifts and appropriate signals.
    • Basic understanding of and ability to read plans and construction drawings 
    • Working knowledge of construction, quality, safety and OSHA guidelines  
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to communicate effectively, clearly and succinctly through spoken and written forms with peers, management, and customers. Able to effectively communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds
    • Working knowledge of construction, quality, safety and OSHA guidelines
  2. Must possess and be able to obtain valid certifications and licensing: Competent Climber & Rescue, Osha 10/30, First Aid/CPR, Radio Frequencies, Blood Borne Pathogens, DOT Health Card (Company provides training to assist in obtaining/renewing required certifications) 
  3. Ability to climb 250 foot towers
  4. Travel overnight to remote job sites up to 75% of the workweek
  • Preferred qualifications are:
  1. Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a clean driving record

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit, walk, lift, squat, push, pull, climb stairs, ladders and possibly towers, hear, see, reach, grasp and use hands and fingers to operate a computer key board, telephone, power tools, and equipment. The employee must have the ability to occasionally lift more than 50 lbs.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: 

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is exposed to extreme weather conditions, including    heat and cold, and wet or humid. The employee may work in high places, and/or work around moving mechanical parts, vehicles and other equipment. The employee may also work in areas where the noise volume is loud and constant. The employee must have the ability to work overtime and to travel to remote job sites approximately 60 – 80% of their work week which will include overnight stays.
