ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
As a vital part of the local economy, the mission of Prescott Farmers Market is to support and expand local agriculture, cultivate a healthy community and increase access to affordable local foods. Prescott Farmers Market (PFM) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, operating a year-round market on Saturdays. Only farmers that grow their own produce within Arizona, with preference given to Yavapai County growers, and local artisans that include locally grown ingredients in their goods, are eligible to sell at the market. By maintaining these strict standards, PFM supports local agriculture by providing a market through which small-scale producers can sell their goods and community members can access fresh, local foods.
GENERAL TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
PFM seeks a part-time Market Manager to support PFM’s mission and manage the operations of the Saturday market.
Hours: 25-30 hours/week. Saturdays: 5:00am - 3:00pm (April-October); 7:30am - 3:30pm (November-March). Additional weekday hours for administrative tasks.
The Market Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the market, ensuring its success each Saturday. This includes handling market set-up, vendor management, and customer service during the market day, which can last up to 10 hours. On weekdays, tasks include financial reconciliation, team meetings, market maintenance, farm/ranch inspections, vendor audits, and onboarding new vendors. The role is physically demanding. It requires a joy for community engagement, a passion for local food, and the ability to maintain professionalism, diplomacy, and accountability.
- Set up and Breakdown: Arrive at market 2-2.5 hours before opening to set up. This includes signs, tables, chairs and up to 16 tents and 48 25-lb weights. Stay at market through closing and then break down the market, making sure everything is organized and accounted for.
- Information Booth: Provide excellent customer service: answering questions, selling merchandise and helping run a variety of transactions.
- Community-Building: Develop and maintain authentic relationships with other market staff, volunteers, vendors, customers and community members.
- Office work: Organize, fix, restock and clean market supplies and equipment as necessary during the week. Inventory and restock merchandise. Keep the PFM box truck and storage container organized. Reconcile market sales, maintain detailed spreadsheets. Contribute to weekly staff meetings and lead market team meetings.
- Vendor recruitment and management: Update vendors regularly. Process seasonal applications. Work with prospective vendors to meet the rules and regulations.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- General technical skills with workplace tools such as Google Suite, Microsoft Office
- Commitment to PFM’s mission with a strong equity and social justice lens
- Attention to details and strong aptitude for organization and recordkeeping
- Ability to take initiative when something needs to be done and solve problems on the fly
- Maintain professionalism with market staff, vendors, customers, board members and community members
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree
- Agricultural/gardening experience
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- Commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship
This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people, including coworkers, customers, vendors, volunteers, community partners, etc. The Market Manager must be reliable, self-motivated, have clear communication and exceptional customer service skills. The position requires the ability to work, collaborate and communicate with a team while also having the capability of working independently. PFM is a small non-profit organization where employees’ “pitch-in” spirit is essential to supporting one another. Occasionally, the team may request assistance with additional projects.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Wage: $23.69/hr Hours: 25-30/week
The position is based in Prescott, Arizona. PFM employees accrue up to 80 hours of paid time off (PTO) annually and three paid holidays. PFM matches up to 3% of employees’ contributions to their SIMPLE IRA account.
