Job Description: Medical Assistant
Work Experience
- Preferred: Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program.
- OR: 2 years of Medical Assistant experience within the last 3 years under a licensed healthcare supervisor.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
Required Licenses/Certifications
One of the following certifications is required:
- ARMA – American Registry of Medical Assistants
- CCMA – Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (NHA, National Healthcareer Association)
- CMA – Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA, American Association of Medical Assistants)
- RMA – Registered Medical Assistant (AMT, American Medical Technologists or AAH, American Allied Health)
- NCMA – National Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT, National Center for Competency Testing)
- NRCMA – Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (National Association for Health Professionals)
Essential Functions
Administrative Duties:
- Conduct patient registration, including obtaining necessary paperwork, insurance documentation, and verifying patient eligibility.
- Process co-pays, schedule patient appointments, and coordinate provider referrals to specialists.
- Answer patient questions, provide updates on their status, and keep technical staff informed of patient flow.
- Maintain medical records, scan charts, and manage postal correspondence.
- Perform opening and closing duties, including cash handling, end-of-day communication, and securing the building.
Clinical Duties:
- Prepare patients for examination by conducting interviews to confirm personal and medical information.
- Record medical history, verify the purpose of the visit, and measure preliminary vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, weight, temperature).
- Conduct point-of-care testing as required (e.g., flu, strep, urinalysis, ECG, HCG) and report findings to the provider.
- Stock and maintain exam rooms, front desk, and reception areas; check supply expiration dates and complete order sheets.
- Perform and document daily equipment calibration and maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and submit repair tickets as needed.
Other Responsibilities:
- Perform patient courtesy call-backs for follow-up care.
- Ensure reception areas are well-maintained and welcoming for patients.
- Execute other patient care duties as outlined in the Medical Assistant Guideline document.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program preferred.
- 1 years of Medical Assistant experience under a licensed healthcare supervisor within the last 3 years preferred.
- CPOE Certification (Computerized Physician Order Entry) must be obtained within 2 weeks of hire if certification is not already held.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
