Legal Assistant
Preti Flaherty, one of New England’s largest law firms with offices in ME, NH, MA, and Washington, D.C., is seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to join the firm’s dynamic and growing Real Estate / Corporate practice group. This position is based in our newly renovated headquarters in downtown Portland, ME, and offers an engaging roster of work on behalf of Preti’s regional and national clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Preti Flaherty’s Legal Assistants play a key role in advancing the mission and goals of the Firm by providing key administrative and other support to their attorneys.
-The ideal candidate will be proactive, organized, and attentive to detail. The ability to work cooperatively in a team is essential. In addition will be able to read, analyze, interpret, and summarize legal and social science documents, including case law and statutes.
-Familiarity with the legal system is helpful but not required.
-Perform basic searches at the registry of deeds.
-Look up property information with town offices.
-Complete probate forms.
-Electronically file with the Probate Court and know how to review the Court’s docket.
-Complete tax documents (700-SOV, Certificate of Discharge, SS-4, Consent to Obtain EIN, Form 56, 2848)
-Obtain an EIN using the IRS on-line application.
Education and Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional work experience.
- 2 years of experience as a Legal assistant.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proven research abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
