JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Parent Educator

Reports to: Home Visiting Program Supervisor

40 hr/week position

This is a Grant Funded Position working in Tooele County. The ideal candidate will live in Tooele County & submit a cover letter as outlined at the end of this post.

Job Summary: Work directly with families providing individualized and interactive instruction utilizing the Parents as Teachers (PAT), SafeCare, or Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) evidence-based curriculum. Home visits will take place in the client's home, at our offices, at places in the community or virtually, for the purpose of maintaining the family unit by reducing risk of abuse or neglect through assessment of strengths and needs, goal setting, education, and guided application of skills. Can read, write, speak, and understand both Spanish and English preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in early child education, social work, psychology or a related field required
  • A minimum of two years of previous supervised work experience with young children and /or parents (does not to be paid work, but does need to be supervised & a reference provided)
  • Ability to provide own transportation with a reliable vehicle (you will be driving to people's homes, places in the community in Tooele County, and to the Salt Lake office for meetings and trainings)
  • Ability to work at least one night a week as needed, and some Saturdays
  • Maintain a professional appearance
  • Assist with agency fundraising events when needed
  • Successfully pass a criminal history background check

Skills and Abilities Effective verbal, written and computer skills. Must be reliable, self-motivated, self-sufficient, enthusiastic, and ability to work independently or as a team player. Must have excellent decision making skills and a willingness to interact with families and professionals in the community. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, in addition to the capacity to establish rapport with families by empowering them to build on their strengths. Knowledge of pregnancy and child development, familiarity with local community resources, ability to establish healthy professional boundaries, and experience practicing confidentiality according to HIPPA requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide home-based parenting guidance to facilitate and support the parent-child relationship by increasing parent's knowledge of early childhood development and improve parenting practices. Provide personalized visits focused on parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being including planning, delivering and documenting the visit.
  • Listen to parental concerns and observations. Teach problem solving skills to help families overcome obstacles.
  • Respect family values by providing culturally competent services.
  • Evaluate and conduct assessments according to benchmarks and standards to identify risks.
  • Link parents and children to a medical provider to ensure optimal health and development, early detection of delays or other health issues.
  • Provide information appropriate to available community resources. Make referrals and track connections of referrals to plan, implement and track family progress.
  • Develop, monitor and review goals with each family. Review goals quarterly.
  • Support relationships between families, parent meetings and the community. Provide group connections to give families an opportunity to build social connections with each other, engage in parent-child interaction activities and increase their knowledge of ways to support a child’s development.
  • Maintain appropriate and timely documentation of visits provided to assigned family and help facilitate quality management. Maintain and submit all required family and program documentation in a timely manner.
  • Understand the essential elements of the SafeCare, Parents as Teachers and STEP Programs. Implement the models in personal visits. Use the curriculums to share research-based information with families.
  • Participate in monthly Group Connections with families.
  • Actively recruit family participation in program.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with families, colleagues and community partners in accordance with the Parents as Teachers code of ethics.
  • Participate in 2 hours of Reflective Supervision monthly and 2 hours of staff meetings monthly.
  • Obtain competency-based professional development and renew Parent Educator certification annually.
  • Participate in the professional and continuous training from partnering agencies.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) projects using data collection and feedback to improve services.
  • Participate in Prevent Child Abuse Utah annual events and fundraisers.
  • Additional assignments and duties as requested.

  • The qualification to have 2 years supervised experience working with children and a reference for that experience.
  • How your degree is in one of the posted or a related field, or how your experience could be a substitute for a degree if it isn't obvious on your resume.
  • Your language skills if you speak another language besides English. We have a high need for bilingual Parent Educators who understand, speak, read, write in both Spanish and English, as well as the ability to translate between these two languages. We also have many referrals for Arabic-speaking families.
  • Verify that you live in the county where the job is posted (or substantiate your ability to easily commute to the county, as well as then regularly drive to and from different locations within the assigned county, often within the same day- including our main offices and visits in person at people's homes and community events) and that you have a working, reliable vehicle and a valid driver's license.
  • Confirm your ability to work at least one evening a week regularly, and some Saturdays as needed.
