JOB TITLE: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
POSITION: Medical Laboratory Technician
DEPARTMENT: Laboratory
JOB SUMMARY:
The Medical Laboratory Technician must be able to function in the laboratory in an efficient and economical manner, delivering precise patient testing to the satisfaction of the pathologist (Medical Director), the administrative medical director, the hospital administrator, the medical staff, and the laboratory manager and/or supervisor. The MLT is responsible for specimen collection, processing, test performance and for reporting test results.
Each individual performs only those high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory manager or other supervisor and requires a degree of skill commensurate with the individual’s education, training or experience, and technical abilities. This includes but is not limited to the performance of all laboratory tests with a basic understanding of both the theoretical and functional aspects of those procedures.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
· Associate Degree prior to licensure as Medical Laboratory Technician
· Shall have completed an approved nationally recognized certification examination as
developed and administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
or the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
· Active Status of CLS-Technician Louisiana State License from Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME)
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
· One year experience required; two years preferred, but not mandatory
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
· Perform all functions of a medical laboratory technician
· Ability to problem solve, plan, and organize
· Ability to work independently and in teams
· Assume the responsibility for the reliability of results reported
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Ability to assume awkward positions such as bending and twisting in emergency situations
· Must be able to vary work schedule for extended hours and to work effectively in stressful situations to include on-call responsibilities on nights, weekends and holidays.
· Recognize that the position presents occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens
· Physical stamina for prolonged walking and standing
JOB DUTIES:
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
· Works under the supervision of the lab manager to monitor and utilize an appropriate system for specimen accession, identification, retention, retrieval, and transport
· Take on-call responsibilities which are a requirement (not optional)
· Must be able to cover assigned on-call duties at night, on weekends and on holidays
· Supervises the work of subordinates
· Ensures accuracy, validity, cost effectiveness, and quality of laboratory results through utilizing and maintaining a comprehensive quality control program
· Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains all clinical laboratory instrumentation in his/her work section in a proficient manner
· Maintains adequate supplies and reagents in the laboratory
· Ensures that all delegated work on assigned shift has been completed and validated
· Remains knowledgeable about the environment of care, infection control and safety
· Maintains proficiency in the performance of all procedures, in interpreting laboratory results and reporting of results in a timely manner
· Performs his/her job function using age specific criteria
· Other duties as assigned by lab manager
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $21.72 - $26.16 per hour
