SUMMARY
Medical assistants work alongside physicians and provide patients with information, services, assistance and support. Medical assistants perform their duties in an accurate and timely manner, while providing outstanding customer service. This person is responsible for assisting patients in a timely, courteous and compassionate fashion, while maintaining a highly organized work area and paying close attention to detail. Medical assistants are cross-trained to perform both administrative and clinical duties.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Functions with autonomy in clinical medical assistant practice within the guidelines established by the Illinois Department of Public Health and American Association of Medical Assistants
Recognizes potentially dangerous symptoms (reactions, urgent care, pre-stroke diagnosis, cardiac concerns) over the phone that requires immediate referral to a physician
Taking medical histories
Listens to patient concerns and symptoms and uses medical assistant knowledge to schedule acute or emergent appointments for patients that need to be seen based on information provided
Explaining treatment procedures carefully and thoroughly to patients
Preparing patients for examination and assisting physician during examination
Performing basic laboratory tests
Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens
Help providers by calling patients with lab results
Provides patients their medical records
Responsible for handling a high volume of calls requiring good judgement and decision-making skills. This includes calls to and from physicians, patients, patient family members, pharmacies, and other health related agents
Documents all health related and patient information pertaining to phone contact in the medical record
Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to Release of Information Guidelines in regards to clients’ rights
Acts in a professional manner, reflecting the mission of Primary Care Joliet and compliant with policies, procedures, regulatory agencies and professional requirements
Recognizes potential credit problems such as liabilities or self-pays and direct them to appropriate personnel
Recognizes workman’s compensation appointments and refers onto the work comp department
Provides support coverage for other medical assistants when needed
Corrects his or her own errors as needed or when assigned
Assist with other duties as assigned'
