Job Title: Hydrovac Swamper
Reports to: Crew Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Full Time
Position Summary:
The Hydrovac Swamper is responsible for assisting the Hydrovac Operator with excavation, daylighting, and trenching activities for distribution, underground, and transmission projects. This role involves working in outdoor environments to support hydrovac operations, ensuring safe and efficient digging around utilities, pipelines, and other underground infrastructure. The Hydrovac Swamper works under the direction of the Crew Supervisor and in collaboration with the Hydrovac Operator to complete tasks as required.

Essential Functions:
Assist Hydrovac Operations: Support the Hydrovac Operator in the safe and efficient excavation, daylighting, and trenching of soil around utilities and underground infrastructure using high-pressure water and vacuum systems.
Site Preparation & Cleanup: Prepare job sites for hydrovac operations by setting up safety barriers, traffic cones, and signs. Ensure the work area is cleaned and cleared of debris upon completion of tasks.
Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with safety procedures to protect yourself, the crew, and the public.
Equipment Handling: Assist in handling hoses, wands, and other hydrovac equipment, ensuring they are used safely and efficiently.
Communication: Communicate effectively with the Hydrovac Operator, Crew Supervisor, and other crew members to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
Support Crews: Work with distribution, underground, or transmission crews as needed, providing assistance with other tasks and projects.
Spotting & Utility Locating: Help spot underground utilities and pipelines to avoid damage during excavation and ensure the safe operation of the hydrovac truck.
Other Functions:
Participate in training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge of hydrovac operations, safety practices, and equipment handling.
Assist with other tasks and projects as directed by the Crew Supervisor or Hydrovac Operator..
Work collaboratively with the team to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.
Position Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Valid driver’s license required; a Class A or B CDL is a plus but not mandatory at this level.
Experience & Skills:
No prior experience is required, but experience in construction, excavation, or utility work is preferred.
Willingness to learn hydrovac operations, safety practices, and equipment handling.
Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying, and working in various outdoor conditions.
Work Environment:
This position operates primarily outdoors at various job sites, requiring exposure to different weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow. The role involves working around high-pressure water systems, heavy equipment, and rugged terrain, making safety awareness and adherence to protocols essential. Frequent travel between job sites is required.
