Job Description

The Staff Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care for assigned patients in the operating room, before during and after surgery. Assesses, plans, evaluates, and documents the operating room nursing process as needed. Operating Room Nurses also assist the surgeon and the surgical team in their tasks.


Functions:

  • Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Perform CLIA waived testing.
  • Serves as the communication liaison to family and members of the operating team.
  • Ensures that operating on correct patient and the correct procedure is being performed; uses time-out.
  • Provides basic, bedside care.
  • Monitor all activities within the operating room.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Committee (QAPI).
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
  • Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Preps operating room for patient/procedure.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
  • Have knowledge of function, performance and troubleshooting of all equipment.
  • Monitors patients’ physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum; evaluation patient’s post-operative condition against established criteria to determine readiness of discharge.
  • Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation.
  • Provide accurate and complete medical record documentation.
  • Contribute to maintain appropriate levels of supply inventory in operating rooms.
  • When assigned, maintain appropriate levels of drug/medication inventory.
  • Assist instrument technician when necessary.
  • Function intra-operatively as scrub, circulator and assistant in all specialty areas.
  • Exhibits competency in performing all functions of assigned area or duties.
  • Travels to facilities on need be basis.
  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting.
  • When assigned, maintain appropriate supply levels particular to surgical specialties.


During the surgical procedure, Operating Room Nurses can take the role of:

Circulating Nurse, with the following additional duties:

  • Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient
  • Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens
  • Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis
  • Prior to cases, observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly; handles patient documentation


Depending on setting, may also:

  • Direct care provided by licensed practical nurses and nursing aides.
  • Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent other responsibilities.
  • Completes required orientation as directed by facility.
  • Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
  • Follows facility and GHR Unusual Occurrence Protocol.
  • Respects cultural and religious practices of patients.
  • Upholds HIPAA regulations.
  • Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts.


Position Requirements
:

  • Current nursing license, in good standing with the State licensing board
  • Minimum of one (1) year OR experience
  • Cognitive skills as related to the position
  • Deptartment of Justice Background Check
  • Satisfactory Completion of Health/Drug Screening
  • Proof legal US work eligibility
  • Valid Transportation
  • Valid CA Class C Driver License
  • Current ACLS, PALS, and BLS certification

  • Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers, managers, patients, visitors, vendors, families and physicians
  • Ability to promote a positive facility image with physicians, patients, visitors, vendors and the general public
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problem
  • Ability to follow direction and corporate policy and procedures
  • Reliable and punctual


Preferred Experience:

  • Previous ASC experience
  • CNOR


Working Conditions

Because patients need round-the-clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends and holidays. The number of patients assigned per shift will vary with facility and specialty, if applicable. Nurses spend considerable time walking, bending, stretching and standing; they assist in patient transfers, so they must follow proper body mechanics to guard against injury. OR Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases; they may be exposed to anesthetic gases, drugs and radiation. The use of disinfecting and sterilizing agents may cause damage to skin and respiratory system.


Physical Requirements:

Exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to a minimal amount frequently

  • Repetitive Motion: substantial movements (motion) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Reaching: extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: maintaining an upright position.
  • Walking: moving about on foot to accomplish tasks.
  • Sitting: to assume a position in which the weight is largely supported by the buttocks, usually with the body vertical and the thighs horizontal.
  • Lifting: raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.
  • Using Fingers/Grasping/Feeling: writing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers or palm and perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touch.
  • Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken work- those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds at normal range; ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when auscultating and percussing.
  • Bending: bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist and/or bending leg; bending legs at knee to come to rest or kneel.
  • Pushing/Pulling: using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward/using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Climbing: stairs, stools, ramps, ladders.


Visual Acuity:

  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read pertinent printed material and distinguish colors.
  • Ability to accurately read measurements on equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and read written documentation; use of computer.
