Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Underwriting Manager, the Senior Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and determining the eligibility of loan applications. Responsibilities include analyzing and verifying loan applications, evaluating risks, and making loan eligibility decisions. The Senior Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for exercising sound judgment based on detailed analysis and ensuring all documentation is in compliance with the relevant regulations and collaborates with borrowers and other parties involved in the mortgage process as well as oversee and assist the managers.
Primary Duties
- Comply with industry-related regulations, requirements and state/federal laws as applicable to the job duties of this position.
- Handle complex underwriting decisions requiring senior knowledge and analyzing loan risk.
- Authorizing and underwriting loans.
- Reviewing and verifying loan applications and supporting documentation.
- Preparing reports on assessment findings.
- Making loan eligibility decisions and approving or rejecting applications.
- Reviewing and specifying loan conditions as necessary.
- Ensuring compliance with company policies and guidelines.
- Documenting and effectively communicating reasons for the approval/rejection of loans.
- Returning applications with additional documentation to the loan officer for review.
- Proficient understanding of Encompass and Encompass closing docs.
- Experience with FNMA DU/AUS, FHA, VA, USDA and investor guidelines.
- May provide training and direction to team members in order to assure clear understanding of compliance and lending guidelines, particularly with those intending to eventually serve in an Underwriter role.
- Regular and sustained attendance.
- Maintain compliance with and adhere to all state and federal regulations and bank policies and procedures, including, but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act, FACT ACT, Community Reinvestment Act, and EEO/AA/Fair Employment Practices.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Educational & Experience Requirements
- High School diploma required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, banking, or finance preferred.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of mortgage underwriting experience.
- Senior knowledge of mortgage loan processing and relevant legal regulations.
- Approved DE, VA, FHA, USDA approved designations.
Minimum Skill Requirements
- Good understanding of banking computer software.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Three to five years of processing management.
- Good multitasking abilities with outstanding time management skills.
- Proficient with MS Office.
- Advanced problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote office environment.
Physical Demands
