Key Responsibilities:
HDD Locating & Tracking:
- Operate and maintain HDD locator equipment to guide horizontal directional drills, ensuring accurate bore paths for the installation of telecommunications infrastructure.
- Track the location of the drill head, ensuring it follows the designated path and reaches the correct target locations.
- Work closely with the drilling crew to monitor the bore path, adjust drilling direction, and ensure minimal interference with existing underground utilities.
- Provide real-time data to drillers, enabling them to adjust the drill’s direction, depth, and alignment to avoid obstacles and optimize the installation process.
- Mark and verify bore location based on design specifications, project blueprints, and field conditions.
Equipment Maintenance & Calibration:
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration on HDD locating equipment to ensure optimal performance and accuracy.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any equipment malfunctions or issues on the job site.
- Ensure all locator equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and in good working condition at all times.
Safety & Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), to maintain a safe working environment.
- Participate in safety briefings and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Identify potential hazards or risks on job sites and take immediate action to mitigate them.
- Ensure all operations comply with company and industry standards for quality and safety.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Record and document HDD operations, including bore path data, equipment status, and job site conditions.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance, and calibration logs.
- Provide daily reports to the project manager on the progress of the drilling operation and any issues encountered.
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with HDD drillers, foremen, and project managers to ensure the drilling process runs smoothly and on schedule.
- Communicate effectively with the drilling crew to adjust drilling parameters based on locator feedback.
- Assist in the training of less experienced HDD locators or team members as needed.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; additional training in directional drilling or telecommunications preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience operating HDD locating equipment in telecommunications or utility installation.
- Proven experience working with HDD rigs and guiding the installation of fiber optic cables and conduits.
- Familiarity with underground utility systems and knowledge of industry best practices for safe drilling operations.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of HDD locating equipment, including how to use locators to track bore paths accurately.
- Ability to read and interpret project blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with drillers, foremen, and project managers.
- Attention to detail and precision in tracking and reporting bore locations.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and challenging terrains.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to perform physical tasks and work in confined spaces when necessary.
