Title: Paraprofessional (Special Education)
Reports To: Teacher/Principal
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Summary: Works with the classroom teacher to achieve established instructional objectives and goals for special needs students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Assists the teacher with all classroom activities and routines.
2. Assists students with personal care tasks such as using the lavatory, changing clothes when needed and feeding.
3. Assists with preparing class displays and bulletin boards.
4. Assists students, individually or in groups, with assignments to reinforce learning.
5. Assists the teacher with duties relating to supervision of students in varied settings.
6. Escorts students as assigned by the teacher or administration.
7. Assists students with mobility issues.
8. Participates in all required training sessions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
1. At least two years of study at an institution of higher education, or
2. Obtained an associate’s or higher degree; or
3. Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
4. Passed ParaPro Assessement
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the practices and techniques used in working with special needs students. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. He employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handler or feel; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, reach with hands and arms and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ten-month employment. Salary to be determined by the School Board.
EVALUATION
Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board’s policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
