Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad (PEVRS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving as the primary emergency medical services provider to the heart of Virginia, which includes Farmville, all of Prince Edward County and parts of Cumberland County. Founded in 1969, our agency has gone from a completely volunteer-run organization to a split agency, employing full- and part-time staff and local volunteers who answer over 3,000 emergency calls each year.
Job Description:
PEVRS seeks multiple full-time Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), who will play a critical role in providing emergency medical care to patients in various situations. You will be responsible for assessing patients, delivering appropriate medical interventions, and ensuring safe transportation to medical facilities. This position requires quick thinking, strong communications skills, and the ability to work effectively and with positive customer service while under pressure.
The responsibilities for the position include:
- Conducting thorough patient assessments to determine the nature and extent of injuries or illness
- Performing triage to prioritize patient care based on the severity of their condition
- Administering medications as per protocols and guidelines
- Managing airways and providing necessary interventions to ensure patient safety
- Monitoring vital signs and documenting changes in patient condition accurately
- Utilizing medical terminology effectively when communicating with healthcare professionals
- Providing compassionate patient care while maintaining professionalism at all times
- Assisting with the use of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) as needed during patient transport
- Collaborating with other emergency response team members to ensure optimal patient outcomes
Qualifications & Requirements
A successful applicant must be able to work in a team environment and exercise significant initiative, resourcefulness and sound judgment. In addition, a successful applicant should possess a strong foundation in emergency medical services.

Required are:
- Knowledge of physiology and humans anatomy relevant to emergency care
- Familiarity with vital signs monitoring and assessment techniques
- Proficiency in airway management techniques and procedures
- Experience in administering medications (within the provider’s scope of practice) relate to emergency medicine and patient care
- Must have and maintain valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operation Course) certifications (required)
- Must have or attain a valid Virginia driver’s license (required)
- Must have EMT Certification or higher (required)
- Experience working in an emergency medicine setting for 1 (one) year (preferred)
Finally, the successful candidate will be expected to relocate in a reasonable amount of time to or near the PEVRS service area.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time position, paying $17-$22 per hour based on experience. The expected total hours each week range from 36-48 hours, and this position works a 12-hour shift (7AM-7PM) with weekends included.
