The Prince George's County Board of License Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants to fill a Liquor Inspector (Liquor Inspector G) position grade G16 in the Inspectors 1 division.
About the Position
Under the authority of the Prince George’s County Board of License Commissioners, this is a responsible technician level liquor inspection position. Work acumen include but are not limited to training, conducting a wide range of inspections, investigations, and surveillance work. The Liquor Inspector is responsible for conducting surveillance work of Prince George’s County bars, restaurants, and related establishments licensed for the public sale of alcoholic beverages. Incumbents in this class are subject to extensive public contact and perform routine field and office assignments to attain compliance with alcoholic beverage codes and regulations under the close supervision of the Chief or Deputy Chief Liquor Inspector. Liquor Inspectors work a variable workweek that involves weekend, late evening, and early morning hours.
Work is performed in various County establishments where incumbents may encounter confrontational, irate, or hostile employees and/or business owners. Physical efforts involve occasional standing for long periods and walking. Information gathered is confidential information and may not be discussed except for work related reasons, under the terms and conditions of the Maryland Public Information Act.

The mission of the Prince George's Board of License Commissioners is to enforce the alcohol beverage laws of the State of Maryland and to promote the education of licensees and the public, while encouraging socially responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages. We accomplish this through comprehensive inspections while bestowing trust through fair administration with transparency. The Board of License Commissioners provides the highest level of service to the citizens of Prince George's County through strict licensing, education, and partnership with County agencies which provides the upmost assistance in ensuring compliance to all alcohol beverages regulations and state laws.
Conducts a wide range of scheduled inspections, unscheduled violation complaint investigations, and unscheduled observations of Prince George’s County establishments licensed for the public sale of alcoholic beverages.
May assist in the training and preparing of minors for sting operations.
Gathers/obtains relevant information and data through approved agency techniques/procedures (e.g., interviews, direct observation, on-site field visits, research of records/documents, photographs) as part of the investigative process which will assist in the resolution of liquor related cases/complaints in accordance with established codes, policies, and procedures.
Prepares accurate, precise, and detailed written reports and documentation (e.g., Inspector’s reports, monthly activity reports, premise check lists, observations, etc.) for inclusion in formal reports or to serve to provide information for potential use in hearings.
Exercises good judgement when informing licensees of business practices, procedures, or operations that do not comply with established rules and regulations.
Issues verbal and/or written instructions to licensees and their employees' concerning rules and regulations violation of pertinent liquor laws and statutes; and works with licensees and neighbors to document and resolve problems.
Serves licensees with violation notices; serves licensees and witnesses with summonses to appear before public hearings of the Board of Liquor License commissioners; and delivers transcripts, reports and letters as needed to the Board and its members.
Posts signs conspicuously on a business establishment to inform the public of hearing dates on alcoholic beverages cases/applications.
Testifies as an expert witness at hearings/court to provide pertinent evidence regarding the adjudication of rules and violations violation cases.
Files inspection forms and related documents in liquor license file (soft and hard copies).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidate must:

Have the ability to work varying shifts
Have a personal vehicle or access to one to perform the duties of this position.
Be a Prince George’s County resident.
Successfully pass a comprehensive background process.
Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
May be required to successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, motor vehicle background check and drug screenings, where applicable.
Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
INTERVIEW PROCESS: The interview process will include an oral interview, a fifteen (15) minute writing exercise and a five (5) minute presentation to the interview panel.
