Summer Youth Enrichment Program!

The Summer Youth Enrichment Program (SYEP) offers County youth and young adults ages 14 to 24 with enriching and constructive summer work experiences in community organizations, private sector companies, and government agencies.

Opportunities may be:
In-Person - Participants will work on-site. 
Virtual - 
Participants will work from home or other remote worksite; will need access to a computer or laptop with camera.
Hybrid -  
Participants will work on-site and from home or other remote worksite; will need access to a computer or laptop with camera.

SIGNATURE PROGRAM FOR YOUNG ADULTS AGES 18 - 24

Young adults are welcome to apply to their first and second choice of the opportunities listed below.  There are limited positions for each program. The descriptions below indicate if the positions are virtual, in-person or hybrid, pay amounts and the number of weeks.   

One-time payment:  $500.00
Duration of Employment:  6 weeks
Position Type:  Virtual, In-person or Hybrid depending upon the organization 

Administrative Support Jumpstart Training - The Training Source, Inc. - (Hybrid, $500 stipend one-time payment, 5 weeks) - Participants receive career training and independent assignments to include life skills, professional skills, Microsoft Office applications and nationally recognized customer service certification training and testing. Job placement assistance for full-time employment is available for successful completers, including careers in Prince George’s County Government. 

Automotive Technology – Industry Training - (Hybrid, $500 stipend one-time payment, 5 weeks) -Participants are provided the basic knowledge and skills to start a rewarding career as an entry-level service technician in the high-demand Automotive Service and Repair Industry. The courses focus on American Service Excellence (ASE) certification content areas for both beginner and advanced students. No pre-assessment required. Participants who successfully complete the course are eligible to take the ASE certification exam.  

Career Readiness Training - Prince George's Community College - (Virtual, $500 stipend one-time payment, 4-6 weeks) - Participants learn essential skills for the workplace to include career development, soft skills, customer service, and real-life work activities.

Culinary, Hospitality and Gaming - (Hybrid, $500 stipend one-time payment, 5 weeks) - The ServSafe course provides an overview of the principles of food microbiology, important food-borne diseases, standards that are enforced by food service regulatory agencies, and applied measures for the prevention of food-borne diseases and other microbiological problems.  It also describes the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) system and includes ServSafe certification.   
  • The Customer Service course examines the dynamics of exceptional customer service. Develops skills necessary in dealing with customers effectively, using creative techniques to improve communication skills to achieve customer satisfaction.

Takeaway: Students who successfully complete the course are eligible for Industry Certification.

Digital Marketing – Industry Training - (Hybrid, $500 stipend one-time payment, 5 weeks) - This course introduces students to various digital marketing tools, the benefits of deploying digital marketing strategies, along with how to create and utilize digital marketing strategies to enhance business success.  Career opportunities include Marketing Manager, SEO Specialist, Content Strategist or Content Marketer, social Media Manager, Digital Marketer or entry position as an assistant with hands-on training.
Takeaway: Students who successfully complete the course are eligible for a PGCC Certificate.

Electrical - Level 1 - (Hybrid, $500 stipend one-time payment, 5 week

The Introductory Craft Skills course provides students with basic safety, introduction to construction math, hand and power tools, construction drawings, materials handling, and basic communication and employability skills.

This course series prepares students to wire a residence according to the NEC (National Electrical Code). The courses are designed with the following topics: 

             • Introduction to the NEC, device boxes, and hand bending 

• Basic electrical construction drawings, residential electric services, and electrical test equipment 

• Raceways and fittings, and conductors and cables, with emphasis on appropriate NEC    requirements. 

 Takeaway: Students who successfully complete the course are eligible for a PGCC Certificate.


Help Desk Technology – Industry Training - (Hybrid, $500 stipend one-time payment, 5 week) - Participants learn the fundamentals of help desk organization, basic help desk assessments and functions, productivity measurements, and problem resolution, software technologies to track and monitor the help desk infrastructure and more. Participants earn a Prince George's Community College Certificate after successfully completing the course.

Workforce Career Readiness - (In-person, $500 stipend one-time payment, 5 weeks) - Through this cohort, LAYC/MMYC will take part in socio-emotional, workforce development, and career exploration programming led by a team of skilled bilingual staff and AmeriCorps members.

911 Public Safety Emergency Call Taker Trainer - (MAY REQUIRE VACCINATION AND BACKGROUND CHECK) A 911 Call Taker Trainee is an entry-level to full performance technical position responsible for developing proficient emergency call taker skills. Duties focus on collecting, organizing, and broadcasting emergency caller information to the 911 dispatchers. A 911 call taker should be able to speak clearly, slowly, and with confidence.

Administrative Support - The Administrative Support role may include making data entries on a variety of records and related documents, answering and recording telephone inquiries including emergency calls and complaints and takes appropriate action; learning to code, enter, key, retrieve, and update data electronically, and maintaining logs of incoming/outgoing calls, emails, reports, and related documents.

Agriculture and Farming Assistant - This position involves the practice of agriculture and farming, which includes hands-on skills to cultivate the soil for growing crops and may include rearing animals to provide food, wool, and other products. This position may include learning about the food system through urban farming, composting, nutrition education, healthy living and regenerative agriculture and agroforestry. 

Animal Care AttendantAn Animal Care Attendant provides animals with care including feeding, cleaning, watering, and walking animals daily; comforts animals during examinations and monitors what they eat. An Animal Care Attendant clean cages and play care area daily (inside and outside); and performs other duties such as laundry, sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping.

Budget and Finance Aide - A Budget and Finance Aide assists in maintaining accurate records and files and may processes invoices and payments. A Budget and Finance Aide prepares and compiles data in the preparation of responses to routine requests and general inquiries. Excellent at juggling multiple tasks and works well under pressure. 

Business Development Assistant -The Business Development Assistant supports a business development team on the delivery of core services to existing and potential customers. Business Development Assistant contributes to the planning, coordination, and delivery of business development activity.

Call Center Representative Trainee - The Call Center Representative Trainee handles inbound and outbound calls. The Call Center Representative Trainee is the first point of contact and is accountable for the delivery of high quality professional customer service in accordance with the mission, core values, and proud priorities.

Communications and Media Relations Aide -The Communications and Media Relations Aide assists with creating and promoting public image for groups or organizations, may write or select material for release to various communications media and may specialize in using social media outlets.

Custodial AideA Custodial Aide keeps buildings clean and in orderly condition.  The Custodial Aide performs heavy duties, such as dusting, mopping, vacuuming, disinfecting, shampooing carpets, restocking bathrooms, workplaces, and common areas.

Daycare and Camp Counselor Aide  - (MAY REQUIRE VACCINATION AND BACKGROUND CHECK) - A Daycare and Camp Counselor Aide should have strong leadership skills to guide children through daily learning activities and games. Aides help set an example of behavior and attitude for children and campers. Aides must be patient and able to handle difficult situation, special needs children and parental concerns. Aides may assist infant teachers or camp directors with any necessary tasks. 

Emergency Management Aide - (MAY REQUIRE VACCINATION AND BACKGROUND CHECK) An Emergency Management Aide practices emergency preparedness by quickly evacuating buildings in an orderly and safe manner to ensure the safety of employees and the facility. An Emergency Management Aide conducts security assessments for organizations and may design security system processes.

Engineering Technician Aide - An Engineering Technician Aide coordinates architecture and engineering projects in correlation with other engineers.  The Engineering Technician Aide assists with designing, building, researching, and evaluating solutions to a variety of technical problems.  

Environmental Services Aide - An Environmental Service Aide is responsible for supporting community programs and efforts regarding nature sustainability, i.e., maintaining roads and equipment, mows grass, prunes trees and hedges, cleans and picks up litter, and plants flowers and assists the residents with their needs and concerns. 

Fire/EMS Cadet - (MAY REQUIRE VACCINATION AND BACKGROUND CHECK) A Fire Cadet should exhibit good character, sound judgment, honesty, reliability, and integrity that blends with a philosophy for community-oriented fire protection and emergency medical services, and a strong desire to serve the citizens of Prince George's County. Fire Cadets MUST be from the High School Fire Science Program (HSFSP). 

Government Relations Aide - A Government Relations Aide interacts with the departments and residents on various government subjects, reviews policies and procedures and may analyze the organization structure, development, operations of the government, and works with legislators and regulatory agencies. 

Health Aide - A Health Aide works under the supervision and guidance from certified nursing staff to provide high quality nursing care to patients. Health Aides are responsible for the delivery of patient care through assessments, diagnostics, and evaluations.

Human Resources Aide - A Human Resources Aide works closely with the Human Resources Analyst or Manager to provide support as needed on confidential human resources matters and special projects. The Human Resources Aide will help with a broad range of tasks such as, hiring, recruiting, maintaining personnel records, and benefits.

Information Technology (IT) Project Coordinator Trainee - Information Technology (IT) Project Coordinator Trainees will be given various tasks related to the function to which they are assigned. These areas include cybersecurity, network support, geographical information systems, websites, applications, business analysis, project management and digital signage.

Laborer - A Laborer performs tasks related to tree, turf, and grounds maintenance on County rights-of-way and at County facilities. Work will be performed in various weather conditions. 

Landscaping and Beautification - The Landscaping and Beautification role may include cutting and removing grass, planting, gardening, and litter control from common areas. 

Law Enforcement Cadet - (MAY REQUIRE VACCINATION AND BACKGROUND CHECK) A Law Enforcement Cadet is responsible for assisting Police Officers and Deputy Sheriffs on duty to keep the peace and order within society. Cadets will undergo training programs that will cover law enforcement disciplines, procedures, and protocols. 

Legal Assistant - A Legal Assistant works under close supervision and performs routine clerical duties assigned in accordance with the office procedures of individual agencies. Duties include answering telephones, bookkeeping, typing, operating office machines, and filing. Good judgment and discretion are essential to the security of confidential information and data.   

Library Clerk - A Library Clerk provides superior customer service when interacting with customers and may provides a wide range of administrative and clerical support duties including basic data entry, research and help shelve and arrange material. If the participant is not certified, a pre-test and lifeguard course will be offered, but at the expense of the participant. Scholarships for the lifeguard course will be available on a first come, first-served basis.

Lifeguard - The Lifeguard has the responsibility of maintaining the order at the pool facility by preventing accidents through the enforcement of rules, procedures, and policies, ensures that patrons are safely entering and exiting the pool, monitor swimming and identify a swimmer who is struggling in the water, and be able to provide CPR and first aid. Candidates must be a certified lifeguard at the start of the pool opening.  If the participant is not certified, a pre-test and lifeguard course will be offered, but at the expense of the participant.  Scholarships for the lifeguard course will be available on a first come, first-serve basis. 

Program Management - Oversee the coordination of multiple projects within an organization, ensuring they align with the organizational strategic goals and objects.

Property Inspector Trainee - This is entry-level technical inspection and code enforcement work designed to establish and maintain housing, community, and business standards in the areas of basic structural safety, sanitation, comfort, appearance, permitted use of property, licensing, environmental, and related provisions by enforcing applicable housing, zoning, business licensing and related codes, ordinances, and regulations. 

Public Relations Aide - The Public Relations Aide assists with planning and scheduling social media posts. Aides help with the design of flyers, brochures, newsletters, updates media contact database, develop press releases, conducts outreach to recruit program participants and assists with promoting organization initiatives.

Social Services Aide - The Social Services Aide assists individuals and families in the process of obtaining specific social and health services. The Social Services Aide assists professionals from a wide variety of fields, such as psychology, rehabilitation, or social work, to provide client services, as well as support for families. May assist social workers with developing, organizing, and conducting programs to prevent and resolve problems relevant to substance abuse, human relationships, rehabilitation, or adult daycare.  

Trades Helper - A Trade Helper performs entry-level semi-skilled and manual work performed in support of other skilled crafts and trades personnel. Trade Helpers may be assigned to any craft area (i.e., carpentry, cabinetry, dry wall, locksmith, welder, building operations, electrician, etc.). Work is performed under the close supervision of skilled craft personnel in accordance with departmental rules and regulations.
