Nature and Variety of Work
The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Chief, Special Services (Administrative Specialist 2G) position Grade G31 in the Highway Maintenance-Special Services Division.
About the Position
This position is responsible for supervising and managing the activities of a division in the Office of Highway Maintenance (OHM). This includes the general supervision of field personnel engaged in various maintenance activities, such as tree replacement and maintenance, street sweeping. Roadway mowing and litter removal using contracts and County forces.
About the Agency
The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area - all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.
Examples of Work
Develops programs, proposals, procedures to efficiently achieve the goals and objectives of the Department.
Conducts interviews or reviews the hiring actions of others for prospective employees.
Investigates apparent violations of the Personnel Law and recommends disciplinary action when appropriate.
Reviews employee evaluations for all Division personnel.
Prepares award packages to recognize superior employee achievement.
Assists in the budget preparation process and monitors Division expenditures and Public Works standards.
Makes preliminary budget recommendations for the Division.
Ensure the budget recommendations are complete and accurate to present to leadership.
Monitors the division expenditures to ensure they remain with established guidelines unless directed otherwise.
Supervises and evaluates activities and personnel Division.
Conducts meetings with Division staff to discuss assignments, priorities, training, policies and division operations.
Monitors maintenance status of assigned equipment and periodically inspects division equipment to maintain readiness.
Supervises preventative maintenance activities.
Investigates/reviews employee and vehicular accidents.
Monitors work procedures and techniques, inspects sited and ensures employees are utilizing proper work methods, equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Public or Business Administration or related field;
Two (2) years of responsible experience in governmental activities.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
