The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an Engineering Technician II (Engineering Technician 2A), grade A18 in the OEPM - Traffic Safety Team 1 division.
About The Position
This is entry to full performance level para-professional engineering position that is responsible for routine and less complex para-professional engineering work requiring the application of County policies and procedures related to a variety of transportation engineering projects within the Traffic Studies Division of the Office of Engineering and Project Management. The incumbent will provide technical support to the Department's engineers by assisting in the coordination and implementation of traffic studies; collect, compile and analyze transportation data to determine need for traffic control measures and to evaluate the effectiveness of existing controls and conditions. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief, Traffic Studies Division. Incumbent must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50lbs on a regular basis and must wear and maintain work uniform and safety equipment.
About The Agency
The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

- Provides technical support to professional engineers in the coordination and implementation of traffic engineering studies
- Collects, compiles and provides basic analysis of transportation data to determine need for traffic control measures and evaluation of the effectiveness of existing controls and conditions
- Provides technical support to professional engineers in response to both internal and external requests for technical and para-professional engineering studies.
- Collects data and conducts basic traffic engineering studies and site investigations and prepares recommendations for corrective action based on Department policies and sound traffic engineering principles.
- Assists higher-level engineering technicians in preparing plans and drawings using field notes and/or sketches to illustrate existing traffic conditions.
- Utilizes radar gun, measuring, counting and speed monitoring (trailer) devices to ascertain speed, distance, road dimensions, vehicular and pedestrian volume, and other necessary data.
- Utilizes information obtained from speed and accident data, traffic patterns, traffic volume, street lighting and other relevant factors to analyze traffic conditions and formulate recommendation to address traffic issues.
- Performs thorough analysis of assembled data and proposes recommendations that address the relevant issues consistent with transportation principles and practices.
- Maintains traffic study equipment in proper operating condition.
- Maintains records and updates data as directed by the supervisor on established traffic engineering projects.
- Performs analysis of assembled data and proposes recommendations consistent with transportation policies and procedures.
- Ensures work is completed according to established County policies.
- Participates as an essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities as assigned.
- Graduation from high school or GED including or supplemented by courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry
- Two (2) years of para-professional engineering work, one (1) of which must have been at the Engineering Technician I level or equivalent
