POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Special Education Resident Teacher Instructor is essential to the training and development of special education (SPED) Resident Teachers. The SPED Resident Teacher Instructor (RTI) is a certified and successful PGCPS teacher who provides the required licensure coursework Resident Teacher candidates during the mandatory summer pre-service training program. Using best practices for adult learning, the SPED RTI is charged with the pre-employment teacher education of Resident Teacher candidates. The SPED RTI provides sample materials, teaching strategies, and organizational routines from their own classrooms to bring the summer training curriculum to life.

Detailed Description
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Modeling and teaching special education (SPED) and general elementary and secondary best practices and professionalism;
- Communicating orally and in written text;
- Preparing for and leading daily training sessions;
- Consistently incorporating student work, organizational tools, district-specific curriculum and other artifacts from your own classroom;
- Meeting with PGCPS/NDMU Special Education Dual-Certification program leaders to plan sessions and the pre-service program;
- Helping Resident Teacher candidates make connections between coursework and field experiences;
- Documenting and reporting Resident Teacher candidates' progress on an ongoing basis and formally at the mid-point and end-point of the summer;
- Participating in planning meetings with PGCPS/NDMU Special Education Dual-Certification program leaders, district and certification partners;
- Writing plans for all training sessions utilizing the module template and incorporating strong PGCPS examples of best teaching practices and student work;
- Attending related curriculum training sessions before the end of the 24-25 school year; and
- Conducting non-evaluative observations and providing feedback to resident teacher candidates.
Job Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:
- Holds a valid Standard Professional Certificate in special education (SPED); Advanced Professional Certificate preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in Prince George's County Schools; experience working in elementary or secondary special education (SPED); Preference given to teachers currently teaching special education (SPED)
- 2 letters of professional reference (one from current principal required); one from a Special Education Instructional Specialist (SEIS) preferred
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong elementary or secondary teaching background with a specialty in special education (SPED);
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Cohesive Framework, including Framework for Teaching, Common Core State Standards, and Student Learning Objectives;
- Knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process across grade levels;
- Experience in collaborative planning and working with diverse populations;
- Strong ability to give and receive constructive, appropriate feedback on teaching;
- Experience and/or knowledge of adult learning theory;
- Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development session for a variety of audiences;
- Previous experience with and/or personal experience as an alternate route teacher (preferred, not required);
- Experience working with new teachers;
- Ability to attend afternoon/evening training and planning sessions during the school year and summer workday;
- Evidence of demonstrated teacher leadership; and
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of a variety of technology applications, software and hardware to enhance instruction.
