The Prince George's County Department of Permitting, Inspections, & Enforcement is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill Two (2) Engineer 3G positions , grade G28, in the Site / Road Plan Central District Division
About the Position :
This position provides senior-level professional engineering plan review, code enforcement, and administrative support work within the Division of Site / Road Plan Review. The incumbent is responsible for providing engineering support to a specific County Engineering district and as a backup for other Districts as needed. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, plan review of paving and storm drain, stormwater management, grading, street grade establishment; floodplain, street construction cost estimates, and submittals from Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) and Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) projects, to ensure compliance with codes, ordinances and standards for all site development projects within the assigned District. The incumbent is responsible for permit case management as well as providing training and guidance to subordinate Engineers and Engineering Technicians. Work requires the application of complex engineering principles and practices and is performed under the general supervision of the Chief of the Site / Road Section. It is important to understand that DPIE is a service agency. As such, this position requires the incumbent to be physically and medically capable of working both inside and outside in extreme weather conditions (heat / cold, wet / humid, snow / ice, and / or dry / arid conditions). The incumbent is required to be both physically and medically capable of remaining in a stationary position, either sitting at a computer terminal, standing at a service counter, or in a mobile position or as deemed necessary. This position requires the incumbent to be capable of lifting, pulling, or carrying items that exceed five (5) pounds, as well as moving office supplies and equipment that weigh up to thirty (30) pounds. Please be advised that regardless of the incumbent's normally assigned duties, this position requires the incumbent to be willing and both physically and medically capable of working overtime and on weekends for special program events. This position description is subject to change at any time. Employees in specific positions are required by the Office of Ethics and Accountability (OEA) to file annually a confidential Financial Disclosure Statement (FDS) based on the responsibilities associated with his / her position. About The Agency :
The Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) is responsible for coordinating and enforcing standards that control what goes on before, during, and after construction. Staff from nine agencies, who work cooperatively on permit processing, business licensing, plan review, inspection and enforcement comprise Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement. The Mission of the Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement is to promote economic development in Prince George's County and protect the safety of County residents, businesses, and visitors through efficient permitting, inspection and licensing services to ensure compliance with established building, zoning and property standards codes.
Examples of Work
- Prepares and / or reviews engineering designs for projects of varying size and complexity.
- Prepares bid documents for engineering projects; compile and assemble bid information including plans and drawings, specifications, and contract provisions.
- Monitors engineering activities ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, or other governmental regulations.
- Prepares engineering designs for moderate sized structures including buildings or for segments of larger structures.
- Monitors and advises the construction, operations, or maintenance activities at project site.
- Monitors contract administration by reviewing invoices for payment and processing related contract documents. Inspects project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications and safety or sanitation standards.
- Computes load and grade requirements, water flow rates, or material stress factors to determine design specifications.
- Provides technical advice and consultation to industrial or managerial personnel, clients, or authorities regarding design, construction, or program modifications or structural repairs.
- Communicates information and provides guidance to the public and other agencies regarding various engineering design elements and codes.
- Identifies environmental and other risks factors and develops risk management strategies for engineering projects and other processes.
- Analyzes survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, or other topographical or geologic data.
- Tests soils or materials to determine the adequacy and strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt, or steel.
- Conducts studies of traffic patterns or environmental conditions to identify engineering problems and assess potential project impact.
- Directs or participates in surveying to lay out installations or establish reference points, grades, or elevations to guide construction.
- Estimates quantities and cost of materials, equipment, or labor to determine project feasibility.
- Plans and designs transportation or hydraulic systems or structures using computer assisted design or drawing tools.
- Completes moderate scope blueprint review activities as needed.
- Prepares or presents public reports on topics such as bid proposals, deeds, environmental impact statements, or property and right-of-way descriptions.
- Communicates orally with engineers, contractors, consultants, the public, and related County personnel.
- May lead and instruct subordinate level Planners, Engineers, Engineer Technicians or assigned support staff.
- Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
Qualifications
A Professional Engineer (PE) License may be substituted for the degree and at least three (3) years of professional experience in civil or any other related engineering field.

The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.
