The Prince George's County Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Fire Investigator Officer ( Fire Investigator Officer pos H) position , grade H19 in the FD Investigations Division.
About the Position
This is investigative and enforcement work in the areas of arsons, false alarms, laws pertaining to fires and fire personnel, and in related investigative assignments required by County Officials and Fire Chief. Work requires diligent interrogation, report writing and fact finding, often under difficult conditions due to subterfuge by persons responsible for fraud, complaints and allegations of misconduct and / or associated criminal charges, attempts to deceive the investigator, or other deceptions. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Chief. Work performance is evaluated in terms of compliance with departmental rules, regulations and policies.
This position is designated "Essential" and the employee must be willing to participate during emergency situations in the event of a natural or manmade disaster; special activities / events. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.

Examples of Work
- Determines point of origin and fire cause based upon on-the-scene analysis.
- Obtain and ensure collection of relevant computer-generated data on suspects or witnesses as necessary during criminal case investigation.
- Conducts and ensures that all witnesses, occupants, and / or suspects are interviewed or interrogated in a professional manner.
- Ensures that interviews and interrogations are documented in the proper manner.
- Maintains familiarity with Constitutional law and its impact upon the interview and interrogation process.
- Transmits evidence to laboratory for examination and keeps evidence secure for court presentation; obtains subpoenas for financial, business and personal records of possible suspects;
- Collects and assembles all materials; reviews and analyzes financial and personal records of possible suspects and / or businesses to determine if motive of financial gain exists;
- Prepares facts and presents cases to the Fire Chief.
- Testifies in court; analyzes patterns of criminal activity and makes tactical recommendations to the Fire Chief on the more appropriate method to address / resolve the problem;
- Maintains Fire / EMS Department certifications to include , but not limited to, fit testing, EMT or higher, etc.

General Plan Information :
The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.
A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.
Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). If you are only adding the stepchildren or child(ren) of a same-sex spouse, you will need to submit a marriage certificate. You will also need to submit the birth certificate of the child(ren) and your spouse must be listed as a parent.
The premiums for health benefits are deducted on a pre-tax basis with the exception of Long-Term Disability, Extra Life Insurance and Voluntary Benefits (Short-Term Disability, Whole Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Cancer Indemnity, Hospital Indemnity Protection, Accident Indemnity Plan, Supplemental Dental and Group Legal Services).
New employees must enroll in the County's health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.
The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.
After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and / or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
