The Prince George's County Department of Corrections is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Recreation Coordinator (Correctional Treatment Coordinator I / II) , gradeQ18 / 21, in the Program Services / Inmates Services division.

About the Position

This is a dually allocated position whereby the incumbents will be non-competitively promoted to Correctional Treatment Coordinator II after serving a successful 12-month probationary period. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level Correctional Treatment Coordinator and reviewed through conferences, reports and completed materials submitted and through observation of the effectiveness with which objectives are met.

The Prince George's County Department of Corrections provides a safe, secure and humane environment for pre-trial and sentenced offenders. We also provide rehabilitative programs to inmates such as : education, juvenile services, religious services, domestic violence, barber styling school, nail technician, women's empowerment, substance abuse drug treatment, and community re-entry.

  • Supervise, plan and direct recreational activities for incarcerated individuals.
  • Supervise, plan and direct recreational activities for incarcerated individuals.
  • Work with all other coordinators to establish and improve community programs and services.
  • Order and maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of housing unit activities.
  • Assist with planning and scheduling special events.
  • Assures the program follows department Policies and Procedures and MCCS standards and incorporates any procedural changes to the Unit's Operational Manual.
  • Effectively addresses programmatic concerns.
  • Completes requested statistical reports in a timely manner.
  • Draft reports and memorandums.
  • Possess the knowledge to access and retrieve information from various criminal computer networks at the local, state and federal levels and has the ability to interpret and correlate the information retrieved.
  • Maintains necessary certifications required to access various systems at the local, state and federal levels.
  • Ensures files are secured and guarded in accordance with confidentiality procedures prescribed by statue and incorporated into Departmental policies.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs other duties that may or may not be listed in the job description or the class specification but are within the general parameters of the position classification.
  • Willing and conscientiously adheres to the Established County Employee Code of Ethics and to diligently and responsibly uphold the County's high standard of customer service.
  • Record recreational activities occurring in the facility and housing units per ACA, MCCS, SOP, and departmental policy and procedure.
  • Conduct background investigations on the program participants and facility volunteers as required for the program's eligibility and access to the facility. Accesses, retrieves, and interprets information from the appropriate computer databases (OMS, NCIC, and court screens).

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Criminology, Sociology, Public / Business Administration, Education, or closely related fields.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Be willing to work in a correctional Facility.
  • 1 year experience monitoring inmates in an institutional setting
  • At least one year of experience scheduling, planning, and coordinating events.
  • An Updated NCIC Certification
  • At least one year of Administrative, record recreational statistics experience

    Conditions of Employment : Upon selection, the candidate must :

  • Be willing to work in a Correctional Facility.
  • Obtain and remain current with NCIC certifications.
  • Pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Pass a drug screen and subsequent random drug screens.
  • Be willing to work day / evening shifts and weekend hours and holidays.
  • Pass a physical examination that includes TB testing.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
  • May be required to successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
  • This position is considered "Essential". Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.

    General Plan Information :

    The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.

    A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.

    Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). If you are only adding the stepchildren or child(ren) of a same-sex spouse, you will need to submit a marriage certificate. You will also need to submit the birth certificate of the child(ren) and your spouse must be listed as a parent.

    The premiums for health benefits are deducted on a pre-tax basis with the exception of Long-Term Disability, Extra Life Insurance and Voluntary Benefits (Short-Term Disability, Whole Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Cancer Indemnity, Hospital Indemnity Protection, Accident Indemnity Plan, Supplemental Dental and Group Legal Services).

    New employees must enroll in the County's health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.

    The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.

    After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and / or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
