The Prince William County Division of Risk & Wellness Services is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual with a passion for creating and maintaining a safe and environmentally sustainable work environment to join the team as an Environmental, Health, & Safety (EHS) Specialist. This is one of several positions within Risk & Wellness Services that help manage the County’s internal environmental, health, and safety programs through system-wide innovations and sustainable risk prevention solutions. A large portion of time will be spent focused on environmental and safety related compliance initiatives, programming and training, and internal audits.
This position reports to the EHS Manager and provides County Department and Agency support through site inspections; incident investigations; training and outreach; reviewing and interpreting policy and procedures; compiling regulatory filings; and other work as required.
About This Role:
The EHS Specialist will play a crucial role in helping develop, implement, and maintain several EHS processes and programs across multiple county departments. This position requires strong communication skills, the ability to effectively collaborate within the organization, and a strong EHS technical background. This position will report out of our Woodbridge, Virginia office and work primarily internal to County operations, working with all departments and agencies. Job duties will require a combination of field work, office work, and telework; and will include:
- Perform complex technical work related to a wide range of safety initiatives;
- Conduct audits and inspections, making recommendations for corrective actions and control measures, and facilitate resolutions with stakeholders;
- Partner with county departments and agencies on projects and programs that reduce environmental, health, and safety risks;
- Prepare professional reports and documents to support regulatory filings and submissions;
- Provide technical assistance, consultation, training, and guidance on safety policies and regulations to all County departments and agencies;
- Assist with EHS training development and implementation.
Minimum Requirements:
High School diploma or G.E.D. and 5 years of related occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or safety related discipline; or equivalent.
Preferences:
- The ideal candidate will have a degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or related field;
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and possess a commitment to excellence;
- Strong project management and organizational skills;
- Knowledge and experience with VADEQ, VOSH, EPA, OSHA, and other related regulations and standards in areas such as environmental compliance, facilities maintenance, and general workplace safety;
- Experience and ability in conducting field work related to safety and/or environmental audits and inspections;
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with County employees and become a trusted team member; and
- Strong presentation and training skills, including designing and delivering formal and hands-on training.
Special Requirements:
Valid Driver’s License
Ability to pass a DMV Records Check
Ability to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; and occasionally lift/push/pull up to 25 pounds.
Work Schedule: Normal business hours 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Starting Salary Range: $70,921.50 - $97,968.00 Annually
