Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue employees are dedicated to protecting lives and serving our community. We train individuals to provide emergency medical services, fight fires, perform rescues and promote fire safety and prevention. PWCDFR is a growing organization of over 800 uniformed and civilian employees that offers tremendous learning and promotion opportunities. We are dedicated to the growth and development of a customer service-driven, diverse workforce to meet the needs of our citizens. PWCDFR has a deployment model that includes Paramedic Engines, 24-hour shifts and a 56-hour work week. Additionally, the volunteer agencies of the Fire and Rescue System provide approximately 200 volunteer operational members providing for a robust combination response organization. (Workstation and duty assignments for PWCDFR employees are determined by the county.)

Eligibility Criteria: To apply for this eligibility list the applicant:
•Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire.
•Current EMT-B certification.
•Firefighter I & II certifications.
•Hazmat Operations level certification.
•Have a valid Driver's License at time of application
•Have any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED by date of hire.
Hiring Salary: Base salary is $61,419.62 per year. This is a unique employment opportunity to earn full pay and benefits from day one of your training. Prior Career Fire Department experience may earn up to 60% credit for the years of service as FF/EMT. Signing Bonus:
•This position qualifies for a hiring bonus of $10,000, payable in 2 equal installments as funding permits.
•Applicants with a Virginia EMT-P or National Registry EMT-P may be eligible to receive a one-time $3,000 signing bonus payable after successful completion of the probationary period.
Education Bonus: Applicants may receive a one-time education bonus, as a percentage of the entry level salary for the offered position, payable after successful completion of the probationary period, as calculated below:
• 1.5% - Associates Degree
• 3% - Bachelors Degree
• 4.5% - Masters Degree
• 6% - Doctorate Degree
Bonus eligibility to be determined; Subject to certificate verification.
Military Experience Bonus: Applicants may receive a one-time military experience bonus, as a percentage of the entry level salary for the offered position. This military bonus is for current reservist, or for those that were honorably or medically discharged. This is payable after successful completion of the probationary period, as calculated below:
• 1.5% - Enlisted Ranks (E-4 through E-9)
• 3% - Officer and Warrant Officer Ranks (W-1 through W-4; O- 1 and higher)
Bonus eligibility to be determined; Subject to certificate verification.
Selection Process: The hiring process entails various steps mentioned below.
1. Written Exam - Testing dates will be released in the future
2. Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) -Learn more about the CPAT.
3. Polygraph Exam
4. Psychological Screening
5. Medical Exam
6. Panel Interview
This selection process is for projected FY26 positions.
Candidates will be required to complete an abbreviated recruit school.
