Prince William County, VA, one of the fastest-growing communities in the Washington D.C. metro region and one of the most diverse in the country, is seeking to welcome a Planner to join the Prince William County Planning Office's Community Development Division.  We are looking for a highly collaborative, creative, and dynamic team member with a background in community planning to support team of professionals and to provide sound advice and guidance to internal and external stakeholders to aid in managing the continued growth of Prince William County. This position offers the opportunity to employ planning skills to balance competing interests and develop creative and positive solutions in support of an equitable and vibrant county.

About This Role:
The Community Development Division supports Prince William County by facilitating and revitalizing its communities as vibrant, equitable, and exceptional places through innovative planning and design excellence for future development, redevelopment and public investment. This Division provides planning services and community engagement at the neighborhood level focusing on the creation of small area plans and special planning studies that promote placemaking, equity and revitalization. The division guides the implementation of small area plans through providing design guidance for new development, fostering strategic investment in the built environment and coordinating revitalization efforts with economic development. This program works with the private sector to identify, promote, and implement redevelopment and revitalization strategies of vacant/underused properties, reuse of existing structures, and quality mixed use developments in strategic locations. 

The selected individuals will perform a variety of duties within the Community Development Division, including:
  • Collecting and analyzing data for special studies within existing and proposed targeted areas and presenting recommendations.
  • Reviewing rezoning and SUP applications for compliance within targeted development areas.   
  • Conducting research of industry standards and coordinating findings with staff and public groups.
  • Researching and producing graphical/statistical information on current levels of service for targeted areas.
  • Coordinating with other County/State departments to obtain current service levels updates.
  • Reviewing proposed design guidelines and recommending revisions, if applicable.  
  • Representing County and Division at public meetings and community groups.
  • Assisting in developing community engagement event agendas and activities. 
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or G.E.D and 5 years of experience and/or education related to abroad range of planning or regulatory related experience.

Preferences:
  • Minimum bachelor or (preferable) master's degree in Planning, Public Administration, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, or related field.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Comprehensive and small area plans including their formation, process of adoption and implementation.
  • Knowledge of specialized subject areas such as housing, zoning, historic preservation, and economic development.
  • Ability to administer and manage projects within a definite timeframe.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations including recent changes. 
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office, Internet applications, database management, or GIS.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for preparing and presenting planning reports, projects, and presentations in an effective manner for the general public.
  • Experience with designing and conducting community engagement, particularly with diverse communities
  • Creative problem-solving skills to address complex planning problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for facilitating relationships with elected/appointed officials or other decision-makers.

Work Schedule: Monday - Full time Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5pm with occasional evening Public Hearings.

Starting Salary Range$72,000 - $80,000/yr.
