What are the responsibilities and job description for the Spanish Interpreter position at Prince William County Government?
The Prince William County General District Court is seeking applicants for the position of Spanish Language Court Interpreter. This position reports directly to the Chief Judge and Clerk of Court. The primary obligation of the Staff Interpreter is to overcome language barriers so that limited English proficient parties will have meaningful access to justice.
Candidates serve at the pleasure of the Chief Judge in this at-will position.
ABOUT THIS ROLE:
- Provides interpretation and translation services of both oral and written communication from one language to another; serves as a conduit between customers, staff, and judges by listening and/or reading, and then interpreting or translating information to provide clear and understandable communications; and maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Interprets for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other court-related departments at the direction of the court.
- Interprets between languages in court proceedings.
- Brings to the court's attention any items that may impede the interpreters' performance.
- Researches and understands legal terminology used in court and functions of the court.
- Receives daily calendar assignments from the Chief Judge or Clerk and accurately completes daily activity logs, or other documentation as required.
- Work collaboratively with other interpreters to provide adequate coverage.
- Court interpreter certification based on the three components of the Virginia Court Interpreter Certification program administered by the Office of the Executive Secretary or an equivalent test by a member of the Consortium for State Court Interpreter Certification (must have passed all components at a level equivalent to Virginia standards), or court interpreter certification from the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) of the U.S. Courts
- Must be able to be appointed by judicial officers in program court
- Extensive, current experience interpreting in a court setting and proof of continuing education in court interpretation, translation skills a plus
- Staff interpreter experience, preferred
- Proven computer skills
- Excellent written English skills
- Must be familiar with the nuances of language, and legal systems, and cultural differences in the countries where both the source and target languages are spoken, and demonstrate continued work toward enhancing such knowledge
- Thorough knowledge of Virginia interpreting guidelines and canons of professional conduct
8:00am-4:30pm
ENTRY SALARY RANGE:
Negotiable to $75,000
